To all my friends Monday February the 20th is Family day in Canada, so I just wanted to wish you and your family all the best. I wish you and your family good health and happiness, and every thing that this brings. This is a very new Holiday in Canada just a few years old. I think it is a great time to say thank you to my good friends for all they have done for me thought out the year, and to send best wishes from Hellen and myself. All the very Best Alan
Thanks, Alan, sounds like a great holiday. As you may know it is President's Day in the U.S., it used to be known as Washington's Birthday.
Happy Family Day! Here, in Manitoba, it's Louis Riel Day. Same difference. A made-up long weekend for February.
Yes, I believe it was changed to honor the billions of presidential dollar coins we have sitting on shelves at the Federal Reserve banks.
Actually, it was never officially changed. The actual federal law and bill for the holiday is still "Washington's Birthday". It's just been now commonly known and also we could say heavily commercialized as "Presidents Day", the day you should go buy a new car or perhaps a new mattress.
Hope your Family Day was great acan451! We need more holidays like that here in the U.S. Speaking of families, I just added a new member to my family. My family being my two Schnauzers (Schatzi & Freddy) and my coin collection. The 2012 Canadian Silver Proof Set. Stunning. I just love it!
Living in Canada, I get a chuckle out of the "invented" holidays that have occurred here, so that Canada would have a Monday holiday that matches the US one on the other side of the border... Family Day, Civic Holiday, etc. Few non-border folk know that the bridges and highways that connect the 2 countries are absolutely loaded with commuting workers and semis going back and forth to conduct everyday commerce. Businesses need to have the same days open and closed for proper co-ordination. The US changed the Feb holiday in common name because there used to be 2 holidays in Feb ... Washington's and Lincoln's birthday. They couldn't afford to have 2 holidays in such a short month, so they eliminated Lincoln's holiday and changed the common name of George's to Presidents Day. As a kid, I used to look forward to 2 school days off during the month.
