If you submit a coin to NGC for regrade, but it get's the same grade and is in a older-style holder, will they re-slab it or no?
More than likely yes. It has happened to me with an old fatty and the coin graded the same but came back in a new edge view. I don't know if you can specify for them not to, but they may need to see the edge to regrade the coin. Matt
Another advantage with NGC; not only will they reholder it at the same grade, but you could run it through NCS in the old holder and they may be able to remove undesirable toning, etc., and more than likely guarantee the same grade, they won't touch it if it will downgrade and it may actually upgrade. PCGS will put their old holder coins in new Secure Plus@ holders.
Yeah, you "could" do these things if you wished. But not unless you specifically requested them and paid the extra and considerable fees for them to do so. And this would be on top of the grade review fees that you are already paying. In many cases those combined fees might actually be more than the coin itself is worth.
I have never had to pay NGC for a review. Depending on the reason you want this done, there may be ways around it. The edgeviews may be nice, but I have seen a lot of questionably graded coins in these holders and have concerns about a continued drop in achieved prices. Personally and depending on which style holder the coin presently is in, it may be worth keeping as is. A CAC submission (type dependent) may also be worth considering, at least if you are looking for a higher grade.
There is no charge for Appearance Review, but for a grade review there certainly is. http://www.ngccoin.com/services/services.asp
If sent for a REVIEW it may stay in the old holder. But if sent in for RE-GRADE it will be cracked out and treated as a raw coin and after grading the new grade will be compared to the old grade to see if compensation is due under the guarantee. But if the coin comes back to you it WILL be in a new holder.
Certainly? I beg to differ, sir. It all depends on the reason. Without knowing the details I can only assume that this person is hoping their coin will regrade at a higher level. If this is the case, pay the fees and be done with it. However, if the case were that this person does not feel the coin is graded correctly, shoot NGC an email and see what happens. I give NGC a lot of credit for accepting the fact that mistakes can be made. Just because it says this on the website does not make it a certainty. This I can personally attest too.
