I worry about more important things, like education and health. The composition of our currency is near mute when it comes to my kids and grandkids, especially when we now live in a wired world where you don't even need to carry actual cash to make purchases.
The only coins I ever need to touch these days are ones I pay way more than face value for. The value of the coinage hasn't been tied to the material for a long time. Zinc has gotten expensive, so it needs to be replaced. I much prefer the ideas of just stopping penny production for 1 or all years. The change might be a small drop in the bucket, but they all add up. Coin material is ... immaterial.
There's so much coinage in circulation, they could stop minting circulated coins for a year or two, and work on updating, retooling, new designs, etc. I'm sure there's a backlog of things to do.
