Best way to organize and display your coins.

I have been trying to figure out how to display my coin collection and how to store it in an organized fashion...

this is what my collection looks like right now!

and i want something a little more nice, and organized.

would anyone mind sending a picture of what you use to organize your coins?

i was thinking of building something and would be ok with buying something fairly inexpensive.

any ideas.

Lets see - people use 2x2's with albums and PVC free inserts to hold the coins. Some use airtites with a variety of holders. Me - I just keep my airtites in a box. So they are really not organized - even though I use to keep the loose coins organized by date and variety. I cleaned all that stuff out. Now they go into dansco albums and/or eagle albums for the graded stuff. It kind of depends on what you are collecting and how you want it organized. 2x2's and albums for them are probably the cheapest way to go until you really decide what you want to do.

 

Every time a thread pops up about organizing and displaying coins, I get a chance to post this photo of my collection. This was about six months ago... it's a lot worse now.

I just went through this process about a year ago. I posted my thoughts here (http://www.cointalk.com/t199778/) In short, I found an internet retailer I liked, bought a LOT of supplies (flips & multiple tubes for every denomination, boxes to store fiips, flat-stapler, gloves, sharpie, lighted magnifier, etc.) all for about $50. Later, I decided I wanted albums to store my best non-slabbed coins in (I put the rest in flips & tubes), and created another post with a review on albums(http://www.cointalk.com/t199783/). I've been thinking of getting a little pirate chest for mine. I like antique weapons also, so maybe I could get a synergy thing going with the two.

 

@rjrickett That's the same kind of box setup that my great uncle had his coin collection in when I discovered it. It makes me irk thinking about how some of the probably once great-condition coins must have obtained their scratches!

I now use a combination of mylar flips and cardboard 2x2's to store my coins in a binder with plastic pages. Cheap, safe for the coins, and visible

 

My little bit of OCD would make my heart exploded if my coins were scattered around like this!!!!!!

 

@jloring: Are all those seated liberty and capped bust coins real? If so how bout sparing a few???

 

I just recently started putting my coin sets on my wall with thumb tacks and packing tape. I present to you what I call "The wall of things I like" Original right?

 

my wife would kill me if i had them all over my desk like that... i don't like the idea of putting them in cardboard flaps because you have to staple them to keep them in and i want the coins to be accessible... i like holding them and looking at them. (maybe not the best practice for most coins but since i only have circulation coins its fine.... i am trying to get a coin from every country in the world.. ( i already have 35 countries represented so maybe i will try to design something that would represent the global nature of the collection?

 

And what looks like an air rifle to protect it!

 

I'm not at all sure, but that looks like it might be a chromed M1 carbine.

 

All graded and in NGC/PCGS boxes of 20

 

Looks like my father-in-law's desk. The rest of his office is an extension of what you see here. He's always complaining how he can't find a particular coin. To each his own. My collection is in my grandfather's coin cabinet (folders and albums), a couple of cigar boxes (rolls of coins), 50 caliber ammo boxes (proof and UNC sets), one safe, and various binders so I know where any particular coin is located.

 

It's all very simple, really.

Raw coins go in paper/mylar flips.
Unless I'm sending them for grading, in which case they go in PVC-free clear flips the TPG's like.
Sometimes I'll store a raw coin in an envelope and put it away for a few years to see what happens.
Raw pennies I wrap. But nice ones go in tubes, sorted.
However I have two Dansco's for circulated but nice large cents and Lincolns.
I like putting high-end raw ones I want best-preserved in 2x2 Intercept holders.
And all the 2x2 flips and holders and envelopes fit nicely in Whitman boxes.
I used to put slabbed sets in Eagle holders, for easy access. But they got cumbersome (big).
So today I use double row Intercept boxes for slabbed coins.
The really, really special red copper has double Intercept protection.

The rest...Mint products mostly...goes into big Intercept bags. And then 80% is stored in an offsite, climate-controlled vault. 20% goes into a home safe protected by alarms, a rottweiler, and home defense weapons.

See? I told you it was simple!

It is actually a gutted Drill rifle my cousin gave me. I was really big into armed drill team for the past two years. Taking a break this year, but I'm going to hit the ground running next. Gonna opt for commander.

I'm not allowed to have a real gun, so my weapons of choice are blunt objects followed by blades

 

I saw your pic and it made me look twice coz of that familiar bill, the 500 Php note. I wonder why you have that in your collection and I can't make out what coins you have in your pic. Are you a Filipino?
If you are, and located in a province, I can give you tips or help you how to at least organize your coins (I made my own 2x2 out of index cards, 2x2 holders out of phone cards, and made my own album http://www.cointalk.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=156173 ).

But if you're from Manila, I heard there are lots of coin shops that can provide all those tips/help which the members have stated here.

Until then, I need to know if you are a Filipino first. And if not, IGNORE me. Those posted above are obv the best tips/help on how to organize your coin collection

 

Mostly Saflips in 35mm pages from Printfile. A couple slabs in Lighthouse pages. Those pages go in 3-ring binders. Also saflips and saf-t-flips in Dansco binders. Last, and not yet actually happening, either Quadrums or Intercepts for those in-between flips and slabs.
