I don't think its'a a bad buy. As long as your happy that's all that really matters.

Man very interested in seeing what the experts say on here. First of all is it genuine? It looks very similar to the one that I found in a roll. The only difference is that the 1 in mine extenders further down below the base of the horizontal line in the 2. (I'll find out soon if it is genuine). It must be noted that many 1942/1's were counterfeited in the 1950's. Just based on my limited knowledge of looking into this myself, I'd say that it is genuine. As far as the gouges on the reverse. Cat scratch fever?

Ugh, my heart sunk for those scratches. But you know what? You have a often desirable Merc. I'm still green with envy even though the reverse looks the way it does. Nice pick up ;)

Looks like the Wolverine got to it

I believe it is authentic because I can see trace doubling on the 4, but since it is on a more worn coin, I would say it isn't a bad coin. The price? I have no clue what it'll go for, but like Wooleytree said, if you like it, so be it.

It is genuine and you paid a fair price for it.

If you can really see that on the 4 we are going to have to start calling you eagle eyes.

koo, is that the mintage or umm estimated mintage? and for those who said if i am happy then good. yes i am i am happier they were on the reverse lol. but the price seemed to good to pass considering it retails for about 400 in good (g)condition. I dont collect mercs really but i like to buy some coins that have great interest for people and demand stays good. next i want a 55 one cent ddo.

From that statement I'd say no, you didn't get a good deal cause you don't like the coin. Otherwise sure, not a bad buy.

Those are not scratches, they're chisel marks. Very sad.

It would ruin the coin for me. But that's not fair. I have a chain cent, slightly corroded, and you can barely make out the obverse design. But I just love it.

So forget about what the rest of us say. You have a very cool, rare, popular overdate Mercury! Congrats. I know you will enjoy it.

I see less than trace doubling on that four, but it is present.

Can you see the die line on the reverse?

There is a diagnostic marker on the reverse of all genuine 1942/1-P Mercury Dimes. A die striation line connects the fasces to the olive branch at the bottom. See the photo below (not my coin).

Really, I didn't know about the die line thanks. Oh and I can see the doubling on the 4 as well.
