What is your opinion? A classic beauty. A coin you would love to see released again for circulation or as a commemorative? Show us one of your pretty examples. Lance.
I would be stuck between this: and this: But surely, I would not wish for them to be on a commemorative or released into circulation because it destroys originality. ~Cannyn
I think a lot of the late 1700s, early 1800s draped bust coins are quite nice looking in their best condition. However, some of the flowing hair coins give me nightmares! But I also quite love the appearance of Liberty's head on both the Mercury dimes and the Peace dollars. To me, there's nothing more beautiful than Liberty Edit: Oh and btw, I would not want to see this coins released again. I feel like it would do the originals an injustice.
Peace Dollar, hands down, the worst would be todays Lincoln low relief zinc cents. Sorry had to vent.---John ( this one from my mothers YOB)
I would LOVE to see a 1 oz commemorative Standing Liberty Quarter. They were only around 15 years to begin with and I think they are the most beautiful US coins ever minted.
Great examples. How about the walking liberty half? The SLQ is up there for sure. Much as I like the simple elegance of the barber series I wish Lady Liberty were a little more...um, how should I say this...feminine looking? A friend said it simpler, "Dude, you mean Liberty's not a guy? No way!" Lance.
Considering the entire spectrum of condition/wear, I would say the Walking Liberty Half is my vote for most beautiful and best design. It seems it was designed to still be attractive even in AG, as opposed many other designs that just look sad heavily worn (liberty nickels, barber dimes, quarters, and halves). Close second would be the Buffalo nickel - it also holds up well in AG and is a very American design.
I would like to see this eagle brought back on any coin in any size. The Large Cent patterns are stunning as well. Even the agricultural wreath says a lot about the greatness our people and land can produce. Remember when we where know as the breadbox of the world? I think that still holds true. Matt
What 's not to like here? Just been redone before.....Anyway,whenever I see classic coins redone like the high relief Saint ant the gold Buffalo and the ASE, I tend to feel like the mint took the popularity/genius of that issue and took a cheap shot at making a quick buck off the original coins greatness. Gobs of great coins came out of that time period. Why is it so hard to come up with fresh new designs that speak about the greatness of America? State quarters? National Parks? OK, but no lasting impact I'm afraid. Another personal observation about our coinage. With the Dollar "currently" the worlds monetary standard, you can believe it gets around. I'm sure there are people in S. America, Africa, Asia, and the Middle East that see our money all the time. There was a time when we only put Liberty on our coins and she was seen "sowing the seeds of democracy and freedom" like on the Walker, which to me says that if you struggle for democracy, we will help! She also depicts "liberty of thought" on the merc dime. So people in the Middle East that get their heads cut off for having a thought of their own, could sit and ponder about a free society instead of "who was this guy?(FDR)". In other words, We should advertise on our coins and currency to other people of the world what and how great America/freedom really is, not what president needed more recognition. Get them a library or something. I propose a return to Liberty as the only figure on our coins and other images that show the supreme bounty of Freedom and hard work. Farming, mining and other industry, as well as political symbols that depict an open society with elected leaders. Put that in the hands and pockets of every person in the world and I would say it could help change attitudes at home as well as abroad. OK, my rant is over. Matt
Two of the most beautiful have been coopted for the Silver eagle program, so now they are not so eye opening as they once were, (WL and St Gaudens). Next on my list would be the Oregon Trail commemorative half. For circulating coinage, next on emy list would be the mercury dime, but they have plans to steal it for the eagle program now too. Which would I like to see issued again? None. I wish the mint would make higher relief, original, beautiful coins again. Boy, I am wishing for the impossible, aren't I? Btw, the SL quarter was produced from 1916 to 1930, so 25 years.
I am not a fan of the peace doller or the seated liberty, but I love the others in the post. For my money the 1793 liberty cap cent is a gorgeous coin that I would love to see. I know this is the 94, but it has the 93 head: http://images.goldbergauctions.com/php/lot_auc.php?site=1&sale=54&lot=31
Hard to say, TBH. So many GREAT designs in the early 1900s. The St. Gaudens $20, the indian 1/4 and 1/2 eagles, the Buffalo nickel, the SLQ and the Peace dollar. My top two favorites are the Liberty Walking and Winged Liberty coins. If I HAD to choose just one, I would day the Liberty Walking, because the eagle on the reverse is just awesome.
I am stuck between the Buffalo nickels and Peace dollars. I think that the Peace dollar's reverse eagle was the first eagle on a U.S. coin that looked realistic. BTW, I personally think that the chain cents of 1793's obverse is hideous.
Ha. So did the public, which is why they were short lived. I'll bet you would love to have one though! Lance.
