The photos are not good enough to tell if the stairs are present or not. The steps on the Lincoln Memorial ae normally very small and not clear. Add a poor picture (sorry but it's true.) and it doesn't surprise me at all that they can't be seen. A weight of .93 grams would be about right for an Aluminum cent. I ran the calculations once to determine a theoretical weight and I came up with .9 grams. The fact that the sound is off is interesting, but I think we are on hold until we get an accurate weight. Good luck.
If it does happen to be, ?? the 1974 aluminum cent. the US goverment will take it from you!!!!!!!They are still looking for the few that escaped from politians to look at back then. they were trying to change the penny to this but didnt pass.
The government knows about the 1974 aluminum cent, but I don't think they care about confiscating it. The only coin they seem to want to confiscate is the 1933 double eagle. Charlie
My guess would be electroplated, probably with nickel. I did a few when I was a kid with a Chem. set I got for X-mas.
I would guess that if only 15 were known to be produced, and this is one of them, and there is money to be made, the Mint will get involved. Though I must admit, I'd watch where the 1974 went after being certified. There would definitely be an article on it in the coin collecting world if the Mint took it back. Welcome to the forum and here's to hoping your penny is .93 grams Good Luck and keep us posted.
It has been three days since he said he was getting it weighed "tommorrow". How about it? What did it weigh?
STOP DROPPING THAT COIN. Be carefull with it in case it's the real thing then the quality means alot. Each dent, scratch, mark or even you finger prints will lower the value if real. If your in school or if there is a school near you, go there and ask if you can weigh the coin in the chem lab where they have scales to measure really small things. Or you could do as already mentioned by making a balance beam scale with a pencil and popsicle stick. However, most schools have labs with very accurate scales. At your age you should still be in school so check that out. Again, be carefull with that coin. DO NOT DROP IT.
GO TO YOUR LOCAL WAL MART OR OTHER STORE THAT SELLS MAGAZINES AND PURCHASE A COPY OF THE JULY 2006 COINage MAGAZINE. PAGE 26 HAS A NICE STORY TITLED "A QUESTION OF LEGITIMACY" WHICH COVERS ALL THE COINS THAT ARE IN QUESTION ABOUT BEING LEGIT, INCLUDING THE 1974 ALUMINUM. I FIND THE MAGAZINE VERY INFORMATIVE.
