I am no expect when it comes to Seated Liberty coins...but something about this piece just doesn't sit right with me. When I first saw the initial photos (prior to reading the responses to the thread)...I felt that there was something wrong with the surfaces of the coin. I just have a feeling in my gut that the coin has been cleaned. The photos make it hard to tell as you can't get a great look at the coin. I would recommend finding someone in your area, perhaps a trusted dealer to look at the coin in hand. Often times, photos are very hard to judge.

OK Good and bad news. I took it to a dealer in town and he confirmed it is definitley real. Unfortunatly it has been polished. He said he believed in its current state I paid pretty much the retail value (200$). I contacted the seller who then offered me a full refund or 50$ and I could keep the coin which is what I decided since I love the detail and Im not collecting to resale anyways.

For a partial refund of $50 and getting to keep the coin, I would have done the same. It's still a nice coin IMO.

 

Now here is an ethical problem. In a few years, the coin might pick up some toning that would make it harder to determine if it had been cleaned or not. If the OP wanted to sell it, should he advertise that it has been cleaned, or is this a case of caveat emptor (let the buyer beware).

I would be honest and tell the buyer it had been cleaned, but thats just me...
