I have a 1967 kennedy half that looks like it came straight from the mint. It has three small dirt areas on it from being in the holder I guess. Will
    this effect the grade?

If it's just dirt, it shouldn't really affect the grade. It would be a different tale if it was corrosion, etc.

Thanks I dont think it's corrosion. After looking at the spots it has like three gold toning spots. Hers a picture of it. 1967.jpg

Yea I'm hoping, taking it to coin shop here in town to see what they think. Not willing to spend money on a
    $9.00 coin.

    $9 coin?

You could have bought the entire 67 SMS set for $9. Sorry to burst your bubble on this but someone needs to, 65, 66, and 67 halves, can be found in dealers junk and/or bargain bins for $1-$2. Unless you feel this coin is a 67+, save your money on submitting it to a TPG.

pumpkinpie what is this I don*t even

Actually, current melt value of a silver clad half is closer to $5.

I know what the melt is on the 40% halves.

You can still find them in dealers junk and/or bargain bins for a couple of bucks at most.

Why would a dealer sell a coin worth $5 melt for just 2 dollars?

    33.59 is current melt. 33.59 X .1479 = $4.96.

Thanks for the advice guys didn't mean to stir anything up. I believe it should grade between ms-66 to ms-68. Not an expert so cant nail it any closer than that.

Please point out the dealers who sell 40%ers for a deuce - I'll take all they have!

    coinhead63 Not slabbed yet

If slabbed coins gets your motor running, why not buy one already slabbed? Many coins grading 67 or lower aren't worth the expense to have them graded. In some cases, paying to have a coin graded by one of the top TPGs costs more than what it's worth and the cheaper, less popular TPGs might over grade the coin leading to the bursting of your bubble if you sell the coin later and it doesn't draw the money you were expecting.

I could see some dealers having them in the junk bin for rather cheap if they've been there awhile and the dealer just doesn't go through it all that often, only getting missed by potential buyers. ;)

Even if this coin was MS65+ I wouldn't have it graded professionally. I've seen 40% silver MS63 graded Kennedy halves for a few bucks over melt value, especially the '67 which had the second highest mintage number behind the 71-D.

Because it's sat in their inventory for over a year plus with not takers on their price, about $2 over melt, and they want to clear out the old stuff.
