Why does it look fake? I dont have a way of taking a good picture right now, my usb scope died and Im waiting for a new one.
A guy with only 26 posts coming up with this makes me say bad.....It doesn't look nearly Kosher , IMO.
LOL Whats my post count got to do with anything? Im more of a lurker I have been a member for awhile now, and used to be more active in the chat rooms, but had to take a break for financial reasons...
AU-Details (Harshly Cleaned/Polished). Not even going to take a shot at the collector value because basically all of it's been destroyed. -Brian
The quantity of post shouldn't matter. I don't post often, but been collecting for 20+ years. I just sit back and watch the fireworks. Just because you put "IMO" doesn't make a nasty post better. It's like saying "no offence but your an A$$" Doesn't make it OK to say. If he is new then cutting his throat early will only make him not come back. If that is your reasoning then slice away. We are here to help and educate. If it doesn't look kosher then state why. Now back to the coin. It does look polished. For the wear on the coin I don't think should be that clean. If you are new then its a good pick, and I hope you didn't get burned. I remember my first seated half it was toasted. I just wanted it. I wouldn't say its worth spot cause its been cleaned, but it will drop the value some. A lot of people here say they wouldn't pick it up, but deep down inside if it had a nice price on it they would.
Actually that should say, "it shouldn't" as another member clearly pointed out the actual post count of the OP to question their actual question. Using one's post count to determine if what they're asking is legit or not is just being prejudicial. Some members will look at another's post tally when they "shouldn't" be.
I have over 29,000 posts in an unrelated forum. Does that make me an expert on that area - absolutely not! I'm always the first to admit that I'm not an expert, and I don't know everything - I give opinions based on experience. New folks are always coming onstream that know more about some things than a "high poster" does. Post count really means nothing, and assuming a new person knows nothing, or is suspicious, is a totally false assumption.
Hello Benplace, The coin looks suspect to me. It doesn't look polished to me. It just looks like a lack-luster fake to me in the photos. The last photos you posted show areas of the field near the edge that just don't look like they were made at the US mint. Look at the field ablve AM of AMERICA on the reverse and look at the fields just inside of the denticles on both sides. The marks above AM are not normal for a mint product. Do they look like filing marks on the coin in hand? I would expect there should be some mint luster somewhere in all those hidden areas between the denticles & the devices. Based upon the photos all I can see in those areas is dull mottled field identical to the field areas that are not protected. This just looks strange & it makes me think "fake". I'd guess that it might be a struck fake from Asia. Don't go throwing away the coin or accusing anyone of selling you a fake. This is just my opinion based upon the photos (which you say are bad photos). It could be genuine with all the surfaces so over-dipped and cleaned that it just appears fake to my eyes. However, look at the field between the staff & Liberty's shoulder. Look below the 4 in the date. Do you see roughness in these field areas or is it just me? You should also inspect the edge & compare the reeding to other seated half dollars. Also, you should weigh the coin and measure the diameter.
