hello cointalk, I wanted to know if any of you would like to share a story about some sort of great deal that you got on a coin. this does not include CRHing. Here's my story: I was in gold country, CA on a camping trip. I went to this one city where there was literally at least 1 antique shop per 5 other stores. This was around the time where silver rose from around $30 to $40. I was lucky enough to be in this city where there were so many antique shops, because most of them had coins in them. Me, being only a few years older than 10, did not have alot of money to spend, so just a few dollars was alot to me. So I went into a store, and lo and behold, the coins were WAY under melt value. They were selling silver quarters for just $4.50, and mercury dimes for $2 each. I could only afford to get a few of them, but I was still very happy. I even told the store owner about the price, but she said they only update prices once a week.
How about these? 75 cents Five Cents One cent (Change back from my local coin shop) Free Gifted in the Secret Santa Exchange I held One Cent (Got in change from a U-Scan) Gift from a friend Traded a common WL half for this Four Dollars: Won this in a contest: Free proof set: (Sorry if I spammed your thread up) Enjoy, ~Cannyn
I think my first coin purchase ever was one of the best deals ever when I was about 7 or 8. I spent 50 cents on a VG 1859 Indian Head cent. I still have it too! :thumb:
I do remember when I started collecting, I often used Craigslist, and I have gotten a few goodies there. When I first started collecting, I found a post for a 1964 Kennedy Half with exceptional toning with the price of 30 dollars. I knew it was artificially toned from the beginning, so I sent him an offer of $12 (Spot at the time) and never got a response. He then later put a new ad on CL for me to email him back and he said he'll give it to me for $6. So I got to it and sent him the money, and in return he sent me the coin plus a silver Roosie, a proof 1964 nickel with blue toning (Wish I hadn't sold it) some high grade wheats and some foreign silver and banknotes.
Mainly from group purchases for me. An example is a rare Ostrogothic coin in a group of 40 Byzantine coins I got for $40. The Ostrogothic coin itself is hard to price since its so rare, but probably around $250-450 at the time, probably around $500-800 on the low end today. "Good deals" are relative in ancients. There are so many rare coins no dealer can keep track of them all. For US coins, maybe a group of 120 silver washington quarters I bought for $90 that had a XF 32s in it.
To my knowledge I have only hit 3 home runs. One was a very nice Half Cent, one was a 1888 IHC, and this one. This 1873 Seated Liberty Dime with arrows still makes my mouth water. As a CT member properly pointed out (Zach24) it was featured on the Coin Facts Website. I had a number of offers, one of which was for $500 roughly double what I paid. I have been searching hard for months for a match to this dime in the Seated Liberty Half Dollar Series. Maybe the man with the match is searching for my dime.
well, I tripled my money by buying a war nickle for 50 cents from the local pawn shop yesterday. spot price for its silver was $1.83
Here's an idea, any coin you ever bought and liked was a deal. That sappy idea in mind, I bought my first carson city coin today at the Charlotte coin club show:u*meY:. It is a 1890 morgan. I also got a capped bust half with rainbow toning, a nice 1864 2 cent piece, a 1859 laurel wreath reverse IHC, a 50% off center cent($2), and a 95 and 98% off center cent (it was double struck)(5$) I figured it was only worth showing the price on the errors cause I can't take picks. hope the thread doesn't die or revert to good purchases after this post...ff-topic:
Last May I won a free 2011 ASE at an auction for correctly naming all of the U.S. mints. I also won a 1914 Barber dime for knowing that the "O" mint mark stands for New Orleans.
I bought a red seal $2 bill (I don't remember the date) off the 'Bargain wall' at a coin shop a few years ago. It had a tear and some stains, but I figured I couldn't lose when the asking price was $1.97 (after tax).
Ok. A story like that can't go without an explanation. Namely A) what was a silver eagle doing in the dumpster and B) what were YOU doing in a dumpster?
