Does this warrant grading or slabbing? It isn't The Holy Grail but it's all I have. If not slabbed then whats the best holder, Airtight? My holders, 2x2 cardboard, are 15 to 20 years old, about time I got out of the Dark Ages. I definitely don't want it corroding away, only took me 40 years to find it. Just for curiosity sake are there still '55s out there? Any found within the last decade?---John
Without better photos for definite attribution I cannot say as to if its worth grading, but chances are that it is not - at least from a cost/return standpoint. The coin obviously is not DDO #1. If it has sentimental value... your call. As for a holder, a 2x2 would be fine as would an air-tite. Personally I prefer the latter, but either will do. Are there 1955 DDO#1s still out there? Yes. Are the chances of finding one good? No.
that is a nice find! As much as I would like to see it graded not sure if I would or if it would be worth it due to it;s condition (looks cleaned, debri etc..) it would only be worth slabbing if you decide to sale it down the road
How do you tell if it was cleaned? Been in my piggy bank for years, I think. So someone cleaned it at one time or another or it went through the wash? I guess if it goes through the laundromat thats "circulated cleaned" ? LOL.---John
I don't think it's been cleaned, but I also think it's not worth the cost to have it slabbed. I think it's an AU and those carbon spots might make it ungradable. I'd put it in an airtight and keep it as it is.
Thanks, I would have it graded or slabbed if it was a type001 regardless but seeing as though its a minor league coin I guess I'll just Airtight it and be happy. BTW what size and where do I purchase Airtights?
Well I wouldn't consider it a minor one, it's the third best '72 and it is one I'd be happy to find. You can Google "airtights", they have their own website you can order from.
In no way does it look to have been cleaned and Ive seen coins with much worse spotting that reside in top-tier holders. From what I can tell from the photos and without holding the coin in-hand, I see no reason it would not grade. I have a feeling that this coin means something to the OP. If so, there is no reason to not have it slabbed if he wishes to do so. On the other hand, if looking for a profit, most likely is not worth it. It is a personal decision. If.... IF DDO #2 (AKA: FS 104 - I cannot say for sure without proper photos of the entire coin), the coin would not the the "third best" 72 DDO. In fact FS 104 is more rare than the "big one" and this would make a fine example for a variety collector. If this variety, slabbing may be worth considering even if only to make the coin more liquid. If this variety and the OP knows someone who he could piggyback a submission, considering his probable investment of face value, it would be worth the sub fee and $10 attribution fee to NGC (PCGS may be pushing it, but to each their own). In an open forum such as this, opinion can be expressed by anyone regardless of their knowledge and/or experience. It only takes looking through a small number of threads to see that there are a large number of off-the-cuff opinions made yet are stated as fact. I hope the OP understands this.
I'm not sure where you're getting DDO#2 as FS104. DDO#2 is FS033.52. DDO#4 is FS104 according to the Coppercoins site. I can see enough in the latest pic if you enlarge it, that I'm very confident that it's not #104. That one doesn't have the spread in trust like the OP's coin.
In that respect you are correct. I've had little use of DDOx or coppercoins numbers and should have cross-referenced prior. However, regardless of what a partial photo looks like - especially with coins were a very similar variety exists - it is totally improper to attribute using angled photos showing only part of the coin. Even a additional clean shot of LIBERTY should be enough.
