If I offended you (treehugger) or anyone else, I sincerely apologize and should have clarified the point I intended to make. In no way was I trying to imply that CU (or any other place) is in any way better. The friendly and welcoming nature of CT is an asset to this hobby - something that is not so on CU. My only point was in my belief that there is a higher concentration of highly experienced collectors, dealers, and specialists there and the knowledge shared can be very valuable to a relative newcomer. Nothing more.
Yea, I miss that consistency of denominations too, but would not mind differences on that bit. You know what would be really cool? I for one year the mint went back to all previous designs of same coin obverse and reverse or not. Imagine an IHC obverse with 1909 VDB reverse with all of the original relief. Just a thought. I would love to see liberty or Indians on a couple coins. why not. I should make a thread on that.
We have commemorative coins for three members of the Kennedy family, foreigners (Leif Ericson), enemy generals (Robert E. Lee), every US military organization except the Coast Guard, why not a civil rights leader? The United States has issued several commemorative coins to honor various World War II groups, why not the Victory Girls, those unsung heroines who selflessly gave aid and comfort to the fighting men during the time of peril.
My own opinion, (meaning its valid only in my mind), is while I respect Jason's motives for this project, I wish to remove all portraiture off of US coinage. Personally I just believe Lady Liberty, representing the ideals of this nation, is the best choice. Any portrait of any person will not only divide us based upon personal beliefs, but not be as good as it could be. I would respectfully submit Andrew Jackson on the $20 as evidence of this. My ancestors were on the Trial of Tears, and upwards of half of them died at the hands of US soldiers under orders of this President who has the distinction of the only sitting President to publicly refuse to obey a Supreme Court ruling, stealing my ancestors lands and sentencing a large percentage to death as a result. I only bring that up to illustrate the divisiveness of any real person on our coinage, and show the pitfalls of it. Not one person is wholly good, and any human being will be viewed multiple ways. Therefor I would prefer Lady Liberty, who is inclusive in her portrayal of the ideals of this nation. I hope my post was not too political, it was not meant to be. If it is, please feel to edit or delete it mods. Chris
I agree with merdoraman, that it would probably be better to remove all portraits of real people from coins.
Actually, these are good points though. I think a civil rights leader would be just as worthy of a commem as alot of other people and things that have been commemorated on coins.
