Sometimes I will use an examining pad. At least, that's what I use it for.

    Yes. I use one.

I've purchased them and also made them using a stiff art board backing with a 1/4" piece of foam covered with velveteen which was secured on the reverse with everyman's favorite tool...............duct tape!

Nah! I'm cheap! I use a towel, but I make sure it isn't laundered with fabric softener in the wash.

I bought one recently. It's a shallow plastic rectangle with a velvet/velour type removable bottom. It's about 1 3/4 inches deep, and about 8 X 14 1/2" size total. I bought it to use to put my coins in that I'm sorting, etc, so they stop going onto a hard surface.

I have my own design for looking at circulated coins. I have made a couple different sizes and generally use the one that was made to fit in a card box as it is easiest to handle. :) You can hold any coin from Morgan to a dime with the same flexibility. I would never put a high grade coin on it for fear of leaving hairlines. The surface is as smooth as I could get it.

I use one, maybe 5x7", jewler's pad. It was cheap at only a couple dollars. Works well, fits in my box when not in use.

I bought at a surplus store a black matte piece of fabric. Good for photo backgrounds, and padded so if a coin drops on it its protected. Not bad for like a buck. About 1.5 foot in diameter.

Duck tape can do anything! well, anything but clean a coin without damage. I used it as a patch for the seat of my bike once.

That reminds me, I have some duck tape to change for that...

I'm building mine right now, a cabinet shelf about 12X24, a yard of felt, and aluminum edging.

It does everything well except for one thing...taping packages for shipment. Take it from a FedEx guy ;)

I once had a 59 Chevy El Camino. Every part of the seat was upholstered in duct tape. Great stuff.
