Looking for a little help here. I randomly came across the Mexican Reale in the below link on eBay the other day. After researching it a little online, I could only find 2 other sales for the 1743/2 1 Reale coin. There is mention of this overdate on several websites I came across, and they say its mentioned by Gilboy as a rare overdate. I only collect US coins, so went out on a limb acquiring this one as the price didn't go out at anything too outrageous As I know relatively nothing about Mexican coinage, any help would be appreciated. Question for the group is, does anyone have a book/reference that could provide any more info about this specific overdate and the approximate rarity of this coin? Can anyone locate more than 1 or 2 auction records? Thanks in advance. http://www.ebay.com/itm/160727274022?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649
I went to the ebay listing and checked the other items for sale. I don't know if it is just the bad pictures, but the Morgans look fake. Any input on that? And, sorry, I don't know a thing about Mexican coinage, but "mount removed" on the slab seems to mean it was a jewelry piece at one time. Still not a bad price.
That's unusual it would be considered rare, various over-dates and letters are pretty rampant on Mexican coins like these, even well into the 1800's.
BonBon and Numismat, Thanks for the replies. I don't think there's anything suspicious with the coin I purchased as far as being a fake (the NGC cert checks out), and as far as the mount removed, I was curious abou that as well, but I have the coin in hand now, and it really isn't noticeable on the coin as far as where it was mounted. Anyway, thanks for the feedback. Anyone a Mexican/World coin expert that may have any thought on rarity or may have come across another one?
Giving this a bump... curiosity is killing me. Can anyone help on this one??... I know I'm probably asking alot!
