Hey all,as many of you may already know, I am a silver junkie. But I have purchased an IHC from the shop for a type set I am looking at completing someday. I have posted this quite a while ago, but never thought I should ask my question. So here it is: Is this IHC Cleaned? If not, what grade would you put on it?
I think it may have been lightly cleaned also Caz, but not offensive in any way. A great looking copper though. Bruce
Cleaned? IMO, no (but I'm not locked into that). It would be nice if those that thought it might have been would tell us what they see that makes them think that way. Grade? XF
Sure, lots of them. But there's a whole lot more that have been cleaned. Just make sure you remember that there is a huge difference between the terms cleaned and harshly cleaned. Most people mis-use those terms, I do not.
Don't forget "improperly cleaned", which according to TPGs includes both terms. For the IHC, I'd also say lightly cleaned, because of the greater-than-relative difference in the glistening on the upper parts of the detail.
I agree that "improperly cleaned" and "harshly cleaned" are in fact the same, since you can clean a coin properly, in a method that is not harsh, (like maybe this coin). What I really want to say that the OP coin for $.75 was a SCREAMER deal. Anyone else have any like that they wish to sell I will buy 500 to start with.
This is why I love going to my local coin shop. I have found many cool items at great deals such as a 1909 Lincoln Cent at 5 cents! Some silver Ikes at $3 under melt and an 1875 seated dime in the junk dimes at $2.25. I love it there because they just seem not to care what they throw in the bargain bins. ~Cannyn
?? What exceptions? For the purpose of coin grading, the terms harshly cleaned and improperly cleaned are interchangeable. The IHC in question has market acceptable cleaning IMHO. The cleaning seems light with no abrassive markings Mike
TPGs will readily return a coin as "Improperly Cleaned" even if it hasn't been "harshly cleaned", no abrasions but rather dipped, even long ago.
I think sir you may be putting different weight or connotation to "improperly" and "harshly" than others. "Harsh" would include scratches as well as chemical harshness, so that "harsh" is the same as "improper". Bottom line chemical cleaning can be judged "harsh", not just scratches. Hope that helps. Don't worry, took me a while to get it through my thick skull too.
