Finally got a B-day present Well, I used b-day money to get it. Its rough but has a nice reverse that I really like and its of an emperor I've been wanted an example of. Its very "cleaned" and shiny and hard to photograph, but I think it will tone up nicely so I put it up in a window. it'll be neat to see how it starts to look in a couple+ months. Philip II, as Caesar, AR Antoninianus. M IVL PHILPPVS CAES, radiate, draped & cuirassed bust right / PRINCIPI IVVENT, the prince standing left, holding globe & spear. RIC 218d, RSC 48.
Nice B-day present, Lots of details on this coin and Im sure it will tone up nicely. Great find, one thing I usually look for in a coin is the obv and rev images if I cant afford a full legend too, this coin has everything very nice.
Couple more Antoninus Pius Denarius. ANTONINVS AVG PIVS P P TR P COS III, laureate draped bust right / IMPERATOR II, Victory standing front, head left, holding wreath and palm. RSC 438. RIC 111c 18mm 3.86 g Philip I AR Antoninianus. Antioch? mint, 244 AD. IMP M IVL PHILIPPVS P F AVG, radiate, draped & cuirassed bust right, PM below bust / VIRTVS EXERCITVS, Virtus standing right, holding spear & resting hand on shield. RIC 74, RSC 245 21mm, 3.9g I suspect a couple people may find that one interesting Heres a bit more info if anyone is interested: http://www.forumancientcoins.com/dougsmith/philip.html edit: BTW I wasnt sure weather or not to put Eastern mint or Antioch
Love the pius, great bust style. Also always a fan of victory reverses. Great Philip with good reverse details. Great Additions Randy.
Freshly cleaned coins like your I don't like to rush. Remember, you are just a custodian, this coin will be around for generations. If you want to retone it, just put it in a manila envelope for a few years.
Thanks Mat Been wanting find some nice denarii with Victory on them, particularly one of Hadrian or Trajan. My best friend got me this one. My mom gave e the b-day for Philip I. Its a really cool coin with just wear on the high point, really cool.
You know I am a fan of the Philip I. Never sell it to anyone who can not appreciate why it is different. Antioch is the traditional answer but I do not know if that is certain or just a best guess.
I am glad to see that Philip goto a person I know online instead of a Vcoins dealer. I was surprised it didnt sell sooner. I really wanted it cause of the "PM" designation but I opted for my current one with very heavy weight so I dont have any regrets. Also I hope you sleep with that Pius under your pillow...>D
I already had a ant of Philip I and this was my 2nd choice for a coin of Geta I wasn't able to get, but still pretty happy with this one. I'm surprised it didn't sell either, to a vcoins dealer or Doug I'll change it to "eastern mint" instead of "Antioch?" then. The Denarius is also a bit interesting. Its the only draped bust of AP that I have. ALso being a B-day present from my friend.
Believe me I was tempted but I have the type. I do not have the Pax with PM under so expect a fight on that one.
You know, with some of the scarcer coins I've found, it wouldn't surprise if I've held one in the past and didnt even know XD
I have wondered how so many special coins have turned up in Arizona. It is a bit far for me to visit.
