This link is to photos of obverse and reverse shots of a coin that a friend asked me to check out (part of a relative's estate). I have no experience with gold.

This is one of two pieces both dated the same. They are a little over two centimeters across, about 2mm thick. The edges are not reeded. The "20" on the obverse and reverse are incused. They weigh 1/2 oz.

I would appreciate your opinions and guidance.

Blake & Co., of Sacramento, is mentioned in the Red Book discussion of California Gold Ingot Bars as having issued bars ranging in weight from 4.95-157.4 ounces; but no examples of coins are attributed to Blake in the Red Book. [IMG]

Howdy RS3 - Welcome to the Forum !!

The pics you have are of a very common cast copy - it's a fake :(

I did check the Redbook and missed the reference to Blake & Co. ingots. Some researcher I am.

My thoughts were leaning toward these being cast because of the texture of the fields and I can almost see a line in places along the edge. What metal are these likely to be cast from?

Typically they are made from base metal and then guilded ( plated with gold ).

I have two of these fantasy pieces as well. They are worth a couple bucks as a novelty item, but that's about it. Sometimes brass was used to plate the item.
