My local coin store sells these DIY slabs with a rubber type insert inside the slab that holds the coin and provides space for a label. Was just wondering if there was anything to worry about since the coin would be in direct contact with this rubber insert. Thanks in advance!
The insert might be silicone, which poses no threat to your coin. I, personally, would be worried about the quality of the plastic slab, because poor quality plastic will outgas, which *would* be a problem. I'd buy one, put a clean but otherwise valueless coin in it, then toss it in a drawer for 6 months. If you pull it out and there's no weird toning going on you got a winner. If the plastic outgasses the result would likely be a rainbow colored sheen over the surface of the coin. Cheers
Interesting idea, thanks The slab does look very similar to a PCGS slab. The edges are even frosted like the PCGS slabs.
i personally would use them , for self storage ... i like grading my own coins .. and i use pcgs or ngc or anacs or icg as demarker so i can get a accurate grade .. some time i dont use them depends on how lazy i AM.. ALL IM SAYING IS IT DEPENDS ON YOUR TASTE... AND WHAT U WANT OUTOF COLLECTING..
Most of my U.S. coins are in the Coin World slabs & I have had them for well over a year now, they are fine & I havent seen any odd toning.
