1964 = 90%

1965-1970 = 40%

1971 - = Copper / Nickel Clad

There are also some coins made for collectors only:

1976 unc and proof in 40% silver and
1992 to date proof in 90% silver.

These all have the S mint mark.

There are reported to be some transitional errors including a '71-D in 40% silver and '77-D in 40% silver.
