Hey my dad and I were just going through a bag of pennies he got. He pulled out a 1941s that has the front but no back. It looks as if the front was struck and then pulled before the back was. I was wondering if this is a common error, but I haven't found anything with coins like this. Anyone have any info about this?
It doesn't happen that way. The obverse and reverse (as well as the edge) are struck at the same time. As Newton's Third Law of Motion states, for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. You cannot strike only one side of a coin; a force imparted by a die on the other side of the coin is required. If you strike a planchet with only one die the planchet will simply move. You have to squeeze the planchet between two dies to strike a coin.
