Dang! love the morgans, but why do my threads never stick? tried a thread on odd denomination coins last night. oh well, maybe I'll revive that one.
Hello all Found a few Morgans In my dad's Ammo boxes. He finally agreed to let me try and organize the collection he and my granddad started. Some coins he had wrapped in paper with dates when he wrapped them, others were in bank rolls he had, some were wrapped in tissue paper (Like the Morgans, few Peace dollars, and Barbers). Other coins were just loose in these old ammo boxes. So i have a lot, but fun, work in front of me. I am new to the forums and open to any advise to increase my knowledge. Here is a picture of a Morgan he had (I need to get a holder for it and the others) I am also trying to practice my photo skills as well so I hope they will turn out. What grade would ya all place on this one?
One of the toughest coins to photograph in my entire collection. Another gorgeous Great Falls example. Toned semi-prooflike surfaces on the obverse. First photo is mine, second is the seller (Brandon Kelley).
1886 and 1887 Morgans Hello folks. I have been doing inventory on my collection, and curious what you all think of these 2 1887 Morgans. I have 18 1887 Morgans in all, including these 2. All of the 1887's look very similar. I also have 1 1886 Morgan that is in the same condition. I have another 1886 that is not near as clean looking as these. I'm going to take them eventually to my local Coin Shop for them to tell me what they think, but thought I might get some opinions here before I do. I'm thinking "AU", and not "MS" quality on these, as I do see some scuffs, and small scratches here and there. These were in my Dad's Coin Collection, and I remember him showing me the plastic tube he had them in back in the 1960's. No telling how long he had them in there. I just took them out last week and put them in some flips, just to get started with my inventory. Thanks! Robert
This is my highest graded Morgan NGC MS67 STAR. However I bought it more for the wild color rather than the high grade. My photo is not the best (taken with my iPhone). The darker splotches of color below Miss Liberty's chin is actually a textile toning pattern (a pattern of the weave from the canvas bag this coin was stored in for perhaps 80 years) -- it's a bit hard to see in my dark photos.
1887-O Vam? 1887/1887 Wow!!!!!!!!!! Jaw Dropping Nice Gang!! ck out link below too if ant one need 1887-O. Cheap too was graded before by Ngc as a MS-63 but no details I had plan to have re=graded for vams.but 2 sets if the 2011 25th Av set blew my coin money out!!!!!
Robert, Just because your pair of 87's have nicks & dings on them doesn't mean they can't be uncirculated. You must remember that many of these were stored in bags at the Treasury Department for about 60 years. I really don't see any indications of wear that would reduce them to AU status. The one on the right does look like it may be the result of a slightly weak strike, but they both look like they would grade 63/64 or so. Chris
Thank you very much for the response, Chris! I've never had any coins graded, and wonder what the process is? I went to a local coin dealer last month just to talk to them and ask a few questions, and he told me I could bring my coins in for free grading. I'm guessing that is going to simply be his "opinion" of the coin's grade, and not official? Would I send my coins in to NGC/PCGS, or would the coin dealer send them in for me? Thank you, Robert
