I just got a card saying the Mid America Coin Expo is Returning to Chicago. From Thursday, June 22 to sunday June 25th. Anyone out there going? If so I'll probably be there on Friday and/or Saturday. If your going maybe we can get together and say hello.
Yep, I'll be going and I also reveived that psotcard yesterday. It's the one and only coin show that I really look forward to going to every year. I will definitely be there on Friday and I hope I can go back on Saturday. I seem to plan my summer break around this show.
Anyone want to meet for coffee or something? I'm not too far away so I was going to try to get there just to see what I could see if nothing else.
I dont drink coffee, but I'd like to meet up with you and anyone else who is going to be there. It's always nice to meet new coin collectors. Maybe I should make a large sign that reads "COINTALK FORUM MEMBER" and then you can find me or someone else from the forum.
I'll be there at some point, but I umpire baseball and my schedule isn't nailed down yet, so I don't know when exactly. I would really enjoy meeting at the show!
I will be there, and I'm pretty psyched about it. I hope there's some good stuff, or I'll be pretty disappointed as it's my only coin show for this year :headbang:
The sign about CoinTalk Member may not be a bad idea. tradernick, you may want to put a sign on your table saying COINTALK MEMBER. That dosen't mean we'll buy anything from you, but we all will at least say HI. Maybe so we'll recognize you better you should put some coins on your table. OK Uncle Herbie as to meeting for coffee, sure but who is buying? :eat: I'll be the guy limping, about 6 feet tall, wearing black sweat pants, blue shirt and a photo type blue and black bag with over the shoulder strap. I know no one will actually wear a sign saying CoinTalk Memeber but might not be a bad idea. What gets me mad about this shows location is the parking situation. Last time it was $11 to park and $5 to get into the show. There is a CTA parking lot not far from there but it usually is full. No free parking withing miles of the place. They made sure of that when they built up the area. If I remember that place correctly, last year there was well over 500 dealers there. Also, if I remember correctly I spent way to much money there.
Ouch, $11 to park? Ummmm, I dunno if I can afford coffee there. Maybe we can just, like, go through our pocket change on the sidewalk and swap state quarters or something. Sounds like I'll spend half my budget on getting there and into the coin show. heheh
I've been saving my cents that I find lying on the ground or get back from change. So far I have about $13 so that can cover for the parking and some of the entrance fee. As for the sign idea, I'm glad you like the idea (it was meant to be a joke)-but if tradernick can put a sign on his booth, then I'll definitely stop by and say hi. As for what we all will be wearing, that can be figured out right before we all go there. I hope that this show will be really spectacular because it's the shows 25th anniversary. I also know that there will be a talk on coins in the Lincoln Room of the Double Tree Hotel, just outside of the convention center on Saturday.
The show is only 2 weeks away and I was wondering what your table number was tradernick-If you have that info yet. I'm going to try and get there right when they open for business. Last year I had to stand in line about 10 minutes before they opened because the line was getting so long. I was just wondering what we all wanted to do and if we should meet at a certain time on a certain day. I'll be there Friday and probably Saturday.
Several of the model railroad boards I belong to try to have get-togethers at shows as well. They have developed a pin for people to wear. I don't have any idea what that would cost but it sounds like an idea. It's been a long time since I've been to Chicago other than changing planes at O'Hare, but unfortunately it won't be this time either. Sounds like it will be a great show.
Didn't know there were boards for railroad stuff. I'vd got aabout 30 years of commuter rail tickets I was just going to throw out. Maybe someone there would want that stuff for free. As to identification of Coin Talk members other things we could do to identify ourselves would be to walk around with a hundred dollar bill sticking out of a shirt pocket. Possibly bring a large bank bag filled with crushed up paper to make look like a money bag and walk around with it. Then there is to stand up on someones table and just yell out Coin Talk. Of course we could all cut a finger and leave a bloody trail to the coffed stand. How about a sign on out backs saying there is a sucker born every minute. :mouth: All kinding aside just place a sign on your table is your a dealer saying coin talk.
IIRC, Midas had a button or something that he wore to the FUN show a few years back, something like that would be cool. As for locating Tradernick, that should be easy, since they will give you a map of the bourse with the tables numbered and the map will have a key telling who is at which table. He'll be easy to pick off the list since his business name is "Tradernicks Coins & Collectibles". My baseball schedule is locked in now so I know when I'm available. I have a 7PM Division 1 college summer league game at Benedictine U at 5 on Friday so I'm available during the day and I made sure that I was free all day Saturday, so I'll go one of those days. I'm looking forward to meeting some of you guys! It should be a good weekend.
LOL, I was thinking that we could get little buttons to wear that said "SGS PR Rep." or something like that. :hammer:
What kind of stuff do they have there as far as world coins are concerned? I'm just wondering if it would be worth it to convince my parents to take me.
Well, if you are serious, then I would come. I'm not a world coin collector, but I know that there are atleast 8-10 tables with only world coins. I mean there are 1000's of world coins at each place with most being in 2x2's. I only cared to remember that because I wish all tables had US. Only in a perfect world could I get what I want. Sure would be great to meet another young person at these shows. Usually I'm all alone as far as age goes. Last year I saw about 6 kids (18 and under) not there being dragged around by their parents. REAL collectors.
Yes indeedy I am serious, It would be pretty cool to meet some other young collectors since I don't know any , but my mother just told me we likely would not be able to go. I wish I was still like 6 or 7 so I could throw a fit and get my way
