Hi, This is a little out of my league, but I found a coin I really like (mentioned in the title.) It is in great condition. Does anyone have an idea of a fair price to pay for it? I know it is authentic. Thank you.
Please consider adding specific details about the piece in question. It's the only way that you will obtain better than general information that will be useful to you in answering your question(s) about the coin. Ask yourself does "great condition" exist in the grading standards for such a coin? And what does that mean to someone who could grade the coin but can't see it to do so in order to help you with this? Could you use a grade people are more familiar with to describe the coin? That helps get things rolling too. Can you specify the KM#? If not, try looking it up in Numismaster "Find My Coin". Have you researched past auctions' realized prices for the same piece? If not, try Heritage Auction Archives. There you can set up a free account and look through past auctions. You must be logged in to see the prices realized. How about researching the World Coins Price Guide on NGC? It's another great source to get started with, even if its a bit vague for some collectors needs. Either share more visual information about the coin in question or do some of the research on those sites and see what you turn up. With such limited information you will need to help others first, before they can help you. A picture would help this thread go a long way if you don't know the catalog specs or how to research online information about the coin and it's current market values. While you are under no obligation to post an image of the coin, it will work against the quality of information you get about the value of the coin in question. :thumb:
Thanks, Krispy. You would think I would have thought to do that. Anyway, here are the pictures. The asking price is about $250.00. Is it worth that? I like it enough to buy it, if the value is there.
Good start with posting images, thanks. Now how were you able to determine the coin is authentic and that is not a replica? While the weight could match if shown sitting on a scale, this may not indicate it has an original compositon, or that the scale is correctly calibrated either. The weight could be correct but it could be a replica. The seller shows the coin, IN an Air-Tite holder, sitting on a scale together with a dealers name card and a hand written note saying what the coin is, but the scale is either NOT turned on, or isn't detectible in the photo as to what the weight of it is, regardless of all the junk added to the scale. Also, are you not even a little bit concerned how this seller pictures themselves pinching this coin between their fingers on the obv and rev of the coin as opposed to holding it by the rims? From the coins of this type that I have seen, this one looks way to clean. All the other sales this person has conducted are in selling common silver bullion. I haven't seen any other coins like this they've listed in the past. I personally wouldn't go near this piece. I would suggest looking at a LOT more of these coins and to only consider buying raw coins from dealers you know which you can view first in person, or only those coins graded coins by the major TPGs until you know more about them. Would hate to see you spend money on a problem or find yourself in a problem trying to return the coin later if such issue arose.
OK, thanks. While I agree that the coin may indeed be a fake, I really can't see anything that indicates that it is. But the coin is common enough that you could easily get one from a reputable dealer and eliminate the risk issue common to ebay.
I'm sorry, but I could never buy a coin if I see pictures of the owner holding the coin in such an abusive way. It makes me doubt the seller's knowledge of coins/the coin's authenticity.
If you're looking for a pillar dollar, you can probably do better checking the silver melt bins at a reputable dealer. I picked up one (obviously with heavy chopmarks) for melt a few months ago. The insane PM prices are pulling older coins out of the woodwork. http://mycoins.co/1806-spanish-8-reales-silver-dollar-with-chopmarks
Thanks for your input, everyone. I'm going to back away from this coin and search for 1 at a reputable, local dealer. I really like the look of it. I'm glad I asked the experts on this board. You all are great!
I think you're doing the right thing treehugger. This one looks a bit too nice to be genuine, but with just a picture to look at it's hard to be sure. I always say if there's any doubt in your mind pass on it. Bruce
