OK everyone i pray you can help me and give me good news. I got a 1974-D bronze clad steel penny. It looks gold. I been reading up on it. Apparently it was illegal to own. So if have the real deal. What would happen. How can I tell if its a fake?
You most likely don't have a 1974D steel cent. In fact, your chances are extremely close to zero. Brass will sometimes have a golden hue. If it weighs 3.1 grams you don't have a steel cent. How did you come to own this coin? Do you know it's provenance?
If its the real deal Im calling the Feds on you...not really though . Please post pictures and the weight of the coin and well be able to help you out.
That is exactly why I've waited so long to ask about my penny. I've had it for a while. It was given to me by my Grandpa. he never said it was special or any thing. I kept it of course. Well I'm 31 now so I've had it for 16 years. I'm going to weight it and I'll let ya'll know. vbd that was a joke right.
All I know is what I've read on the internet. The fact that it was and possibly still is illegal scares me. It holds sentimental value the cash value don't matter. So what else ca you tell me about it. I love a good story
Unless your grandfather had some special access to getting the coin from the mint (and that is assuming that it actually is what you think it is, which it probably isn't --- see post #2, above) then you stand more of a chance of being struck by lightning than getting 'that' coin. Plus, provenance is the lineage that can be proved where a coin came from, and as much as it's nice to hear that it was someones grandfather that had it and passed it down, that is not provenance. Provenance is documentable. If by some chance (however slight) it actually turns out that you have one, then it's value to you and everyone else in this country would probably be ZERO since it would be worthless to buy something you know will be confiscated without remuneration by the government. But do the tests, put up some pics, and it will most likely turn out to be an ordinary penny that some high-schooler experimented on in lab (or something like that).
