    Dear Senator,

I am writing, to urge your support for the Currency Optimization, Innovation and National Savings (COINS) Act, H.R. 2977 and the companion bill in the Senate. This bi-partisan legislation, sponsored by Representative David Schweikert (R-AZ) and Senators Tom Harkin (D-IA) and John McCain (R-AZ) will eliminate the wasteful dollar bill from circulation and save the government billions of dollars in the process.

According to the Government Accountability Office (GAO), eliminating the dollar bill and transitioning to the dollar coin will save the government at least $5.5 billion over the next 30 years. During this time when all Americans are demanding increased government efficiency, we can’t afford to wait any longer to make this simple, common sense change.

Small businesses, mass transit agencies, budget watchdogs, trade associations, and private companies all agree; the dollar coin makes sense. Please join the bi-partisan effort to reduce the deficit by eliminating the dollar bill and switching to the dollar coin.

And please add language, or encourage Senators Tom Harkin and John McCain to add language to the COINS Act to include a redesigned $2 Federal Reserve note, or a bimetallic $2 coin, using Canada's $2 coin as the prototype, to help reduce the need of $1 coins needed to be minted, to save money, and to help the transition over to the $1 coin. A redesigned $2 note would probably be the best way to go, due to the fact of the $1 note slot being freed up for $2 notes, and public opinion polls in the past have shown that, should the $1 note be phased out, most of the American public will embrace the $2 note, therefore, I reccommend a redesign of the $2 note to refresh the $2 denomination, so that most people who do not realize the $2 notes are still being printed, will know that the $2 denomination is still a current denomination, and will not hoard them, and would spend them. Also, being a visually impaired person, and with my entire immediate and extended family being visually impaired, and the fact that the law states that ALL denominations except the $1 note be redesigned to add features for the visually impaired, yet I am hearing that the government may not be changing the $2 note for these features, which they should have to, as stated by law, now would be the best time to get some $2 note redesign legislation passed, and have vendors and self checkout companies reprogram their machines to take the new design $2 notes which should be simultaneously introduced with the new $5 note so that vendors and self checkout companies may reprogram their machines to accept new $2 and $5 notes of the next currency redesigning at the same time, and NAMA ( the National Automatic Merchandising Association) agreed with me that, my argument for a new design $2 note to be released with the next new $5 note release, is a valid one. Or, you could push for the bimetallic $2 coin I mentioned, and save the government even more money. Canada has a sucessful bimetallic $2 coin (the twonie) circulating, as do the Euro Zone countries, among other countries. So, why not a U.S. $2 coin?

So please, support the (COINS Act), as well as advocate language to be added to the (COINS Act) for a redesigned $2 Federal Reserve note, or a new bimetallic U.S. $2 coin be added to the (COINS Act) to make a smoother transition to the dollar coin for the American people.

    Sincerely,

I support the (Coins Act) because I think it ridiculous for our country to waste the Prez dollars that are already stockpiled. I think if you write the Senators asking for a coin or especially a $2 dollar bill is a bit off the mark. jmho

I'll agree with you on that one 110%

Why is it such a bad thing? The Ex-Congressman, Jim Kolbe, now Chairman of the Dollar Coin Alliance, supported redesigned $2 bills with his past $1 bill elimination bills. As for a $2 coin, I only wrote that in there because, when the Sac was about to come out, and the government was thinking of eliminating the $1 bill, they tossed around the idea to authorize the U.S.Mint a $2 coin to meet the demand for coins to replace all of the $1 bills in circulation, at a sooner time, if need be.
