i have 2 PCGS and 1 NGC coming in soon, after i see a slab in person ( these are my first ever slabs) i will have a better idea of the grading they use and how they differ,
Depends on what attributions and designations you want on the label for the marketing fluff. Whether you think DCAM is better than UCAM. One set of bell lines or two sets for an FBL. The list could go on and on.
How come there is no "write-in" space? My vote goes to Bob's Coin Grading in Hackensack, New Jersey (for no other reason than I like the catchy name.)
i'm going with ngc I'm currently working in my american eagles set i'm getting ngc's ms69 but I have some more ngc's
While most of my slabbed coins are PCGS slabbed, I went with NGC. I always thought they were a little more consistent than PCGS. PCGS is still a top tier grader, but I've seen more over graded Morgans and Peaces in PCGS slabs than NGC. While with the same note, I've seen alot of under graded too. Plus I tend to like NGC's prices for grading and the designations a little better than PCGS.
I was under the impression it went along the lines of personal preference more than anything; like Coke or Pepsi, Pizza Hut or Papa John's, edited
For me, it would be Coke, Pizza Hut, and edited :hail: (Sorry, I just gotta response to your post - too kewl to miss it :smile - thanks as well for your post on koala 2012 at Provident - I gotta get some of them)
To me I prefer PCGS, I like their slab looks more than NGC. I've heard others say that the NGC slabs cover the rim of the coin? And I also feel all that hard white plastic detracts from the coin vs having a clear PCGS case. Anywho....I prefer PCGS, I like their look better. Different strokes for different folks.
That depends on what you want and what you intend to do with the coin. Do you want the highest grade you can get, or the most accurate and conservative grade you can get ? People submit coins to both NGC and PCGS for both reasons. With some coins NGC has tougher standards, with some coins PCGS has tougher standards. So say a guy has a coin he wants to sell. He knows that with that series that PCGS is tougher than NGC. And he knows that the higher the grade is the more likely it is for him to get a better price. That's because he also knows that there are more plastic buyers out there than there are coin buyers. So he sends the coin to NGC where he will likely get the highest grade. You can of course reverse this story and have the coin sent to PCGS because on a given series of coins NGC is tougher than PCGS. So PCGS will assign the highest grade in that case. Then you have the other side of the story. You have a discriminating collector with a coin to submit. He wants only coins that are graded as accurately and conservatively as possible for his collection. He has no intention of selling this coin for many years. And he knows that with this coin NGC has the tougher standards, so he sends his coin to NGC. And you can of course reverse things where with a given coin PCGS has the tougher standards and the coin is sent to PCGS. Now, what most people don't realize is just how many other people there are who know the same things that I described above. Knowledgeable dealers know this. Knowledgeable collectors know this. Which is why both groups will completely ignore the grade on the slab and only pay attention to the coin. Unfortunately there are a whole lot more people out there who don't know this. And they pay an undue amount of attention to the grade on the slab and the name of the TPG for any of various reasons. Such is life.
Thanks for the reply. I guess the only remaining question is, what coins to send to PCGS and what coins to send to NGC if i'm looking for the best possible grade.
I think it would be interesting to compare the results of this common question over the years. NGC vs PCGS 2010 NGC vs PCGS 2009 My reason for preferring NGC has not changed: I like NGC because I think that rainbow toned coins look better against the white insert rather than the clear plastic of PCGS. I have run into many collectors that think just the opposite. But for me, the contrast from the color on the coin and the white insert really brings out the colors.
I still prefer the NGC holder for the same reasons mentioned in previous threads. I like the look of the NGC holders and the consistency I have witnessed in the NGC grading. I also appreciate the PCGS holder and the original small white ANACS holder. However, if I send coins for encapsulation, I normally send them to NGC.
