A guy I know has offered to sale me what he called a double eagle for $50. He didn't have it with him for me to look at, so I'm not sure what it is. I really don't think he is trying to purposefully rip me off, but I am about 174% positive he doesn't know what he's talking about. Do any U.S. gold coins exist that are only worth about $50? Can you think of any coins that might be mistaken for gold that are only worth around $50? I'm just trying to get an idea of what he has. If it turns out to be a double eagle, I'll buy it and get him a cup of coffee. Thanks for any help, and jokes are also welcome!
If you don't know what it is, then ask for pictures of it. If it is an actual double eagle, Its probably fake because he knew the term for it, which means he knows about coins.
As far as I know, a double eagle is a $20 coin, face value. They were last minted in 1933 I think, and were gold. This just does not seem right, from what redbook says, it is .96750 ounce of gold. It may be like a bullion with the desingn of a Saint Gaudenes Double eagle. However, it would have to be what,1/30 ounce of gold?
Fake, maybe, cause he knew the term, and it is worth what it's worth, at least most of it's weight in gold. But man, if you could legally get a '33 double eagle for 50 bucks...
There was a series of "double eagle" presidential tokens issued some years back... all had "Double Eagle" on the reverse. Though some try to sell them on eBay for upwards of $70, they are basically worthless. I picked up a dozen or so from the $1 bucket at my local dealer and sold them for $2.00 at the flea market. Here's what they look like: http://www.ebay.com/itm/T9458-RONALD-REAGAN-PRESIDENT-1984-DOUBLE-EAGLE-MEDAL-/330400318826?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item4ced64c56a
I get the impression this guy is not very knowledgeable when it comes to coins. I am going to assume that it is either fake, or the above mentioned coin or similar. Thanks for the advice, I'll keep you posted on what happens. Thanks again.
