Ok, I'm not going to speculate if it looks genuine or synthetic BUT I will comment that how would it be possible for "D" to be imprinted in such a way that it is rotated 135 degrees counter-clock wise and the top and straight side of the D be deeper impressed into the actual planchet ??
This does not look like a mint mark to me . It looks as if something has dug into the coin and pushed up some metal to make it look like a mint mark. of course I'm just looking at a photo and photos can be confusing.
Mike, can you get a better picture of that area.. My first guess is that a coin counting machine has moved the MM. but I can not see any trails from the moving.. I think its an interesting piece and should have a deeper in hand look. If you need somebody at CONECA to take a peek let me know.
I think it is definitely PMD. As rascal said, something gouged it and pushed metal up. You can even see the striations within the gouged area. Chris
