does this proof only come in type I, or is there a type II as well?

    just wondering.

    thanks for any replies.

And for reference, Type I has bold lettering on the reverse, Type II has what is referred to as delicate lettering.

I'm glad Ike was dead when they issued a delicate lettered coin with his image! I imagine that he would not have approved of "delicate".

    question then

Why does the danso book for eisenhower dollars, (which includes proof only issues), not list a T1/T2 for the 40% silver proof, when it lists them for the P, D, and clad proofs?

Different books have slots for different things. It is the attempt to please as many different people as possible.

The PCGS website for the IKE Proofs list the following-

    76S T1
    76S T1
    76S T2
    76S T2
    76S Silver
    76S Silver

1.) There are rather large differences in the prices of these IKE proof dollars. They are all clad except of course for the two silver ones. What is the difference in these IKE's?

2.) Why isn't the third type IKE dollar listed by PCGS?

Someone told me there were three types of IKE's, and it has something to do with the islands on the back of the dollar. Someone with the knowledge on our list please clear-up for me exactly what are the varieties, and what should I look for to notice the difference?

Is there a web site where I can read about all the IKE's and the differences?

    Thanks, Jim

I cannot find a good online reference... But...

I know (I think) of three varieties of the islands of Cuba structure on the regular reverses. They are attributable to filled die errors. They aren't worth much more than regular Ikes.
There are also variations in the bicen. reverse. The straight/curved R in Dollar and of course the bold/normal lettering on the reverse.

I don't know the third type Ike you are referring to? Can you elaborate or provide a pic? I will take some pictures of these variations and post them in a little bit.

Sorry Cris, but I don't have a camera, and I don't know how to go about posting a picture. Thank you for your reply. Jim

Just a bit of confusion here. The Ike with 3 varieties is the '72. The link Geod provided illustrates them quite nicely. The first two varieties have been recognized for some time - but the third variety has only been recognized for about a year now. To the best of my knowledge - this is the only year - '72 - with 3 varieties.

In 1976, I think the 40% Silver Coins, both proof and unc., had only the Type I reverse. I am out of town and not able to look this up, but I'm pretty sure that is the case.

A question I have is this ---- are all the unsold Bicentennial silver sets still sitting in Treasury vaults, or did they finally melt them??? I don't recall hearing about them either way.

According to statements issued by the Mint - there are no sets or coins of any kind or from any year sitting in the vaults. This is a common misconception that many people have - that there are thousands of coins in the Mint's vaults. There are not.
