I am looking to get a half-dime for my collection. I found this on ebay http://www.ebay.com/itm/1851-O-F-VF...32?pt=Coins_US_Individual&hash=item56478ca4d8 . What do you think of the grade, is it a slider etc. It appears legit, and I have dealt with the company before and they have always been great. They post great pics, take offers and respond quickly.
Several comments: -- I've dealt with them before and I've mostly got a positive impression about them. -- There is no such grade as F/VF in coins (in stamps, yes); I question the intent of any dealer that uses such terminology. -- If you are looking for a SL Half Dime for a type set save a bit more money and get an XF from the late 1860's or 1870's. Better coin for almost the same price.
He's grading each side in an effort to get somebody to pay more for the coin than it is really worth.
I did what you suggested and bought an XF. I found an 1853XF from the same company and offered 52.00 which they accepted. Coin world has it valued at 65.00. Here's the link. http://www.ebay.com/itm/370577983728?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649
I don't like it, just doesn't look right. I got this one a while back for 20-25 dollars Any thoughts, but not trying to steal the thread.
That's a pretty nice coin. The slight edge bump is the biggest shortcoming. $40 seems a bit steep, but he does accept offers. I'd offer him $30. [edited to add: I read now you've bought a higher price example.]
