Hey all, So I recently made a purchase for these coins with a fellow CT Member: Well, I recieved the coins but he hasn't recieved the money yet. I told him if he didn't get it monday (Today) I'll send it back. Now I know he didn't get it back because the letter was sent back to me. It came back empty of the 1964 proof cent, 1964 UNC cent and silver dime (Gifts not intended for the purchase) and $23 cash. My question is: Is there a way I can go about to get these retrieved? My guess is somehow one of the cents got loose out of the mylar flip and got caught (What I see on the reverse of the envelope) I am not very high in cash, so $23 is actually quite a bit to me. Does the PO do reimbursement? Or have a Lost&Found program? I know it would be a federal offense for a postal worker to pocket this and walk out, but I do know this kind of stuff happens. To avert this in the future, I am going to open a paypal account (though I don't believe in banking) and not send cash in the mail. I am also going to send the coins back to the sender for I got them last week. Any help here?
I did not. It dindn't meet the requirements to be a parcel post, so they didn't ask if I wanted any of that rubbish.
I think you got a $23.00 lesson in how not to send coins. As to whether USPS can do anything I don't know. It probably happened at the regional sorting facility, wherever that is in your case, by automated sorting machines.
Hate to see you lose your new coins Caz. Could I PayPal the other member the $23? Just until the usps admits it's wrongdoing & reimburses you.
Lesson Learned. After almost three years of doing cash only transactions and getting nothing but the best results, I'm going to be getting myself a checking account linked to paypal. Though I won't have any money in it until I make a purchase, then I take my money and deposit it. Like stated before, I don't like banks at all.
I've got the coins ready to ship back. I am sad to see them leave my hands because I needed the half dime for a type set and just all out love Mercs, though I think of it like this: I just got paid $-23 to photograph somebody's coins. It makes me feel better
Thanks, but I'll have to pass. To my knowledge, the sender doesn't have paypal either. A Loose-Loose Situation
What a nice gesture! It's like pulling teeth with the USPS when they loose an INSURED package. Let alone cash. NEVER send cash. If you have to take your cash to the PO and buy a postal money order.
Sorry to hear about that. You should never send cash with the USPS, its like the workers have a sixth sense about that and will open and steal it. Its more safe to send money order since only the person's name on the MO can cash it. And also I think Paypal is making new users jump through hoops to sign up with them now. Expect to give them a lot of personal info.
Caz, sorry to hear of what happened. Regarding opening a checking account for use in the future, many banks require one to maintain a certain balance in them in order to get free checking, else they charge for each check you write. You may be as well or better served by using a Money Order, as has already been suggested! PayPal likes to have back-up information, such as a credit card that they can charge if there are not the appropriate funds in your account.. It IS a lot of data to give out.. easier to use a MO (repeating myself..) Lucy
USPS won't admit anything, they're not liable unless insurance was purchased and then again, you have to provide proof of the value in the package or envelope, I doubt you can prove cash as they wouldn't accept pictures of them since anyone could do that and claim loss of valuables, etc.
Only do cash transactions in person for sure. USPS or any other carrier cannot ensure every package won't be damaged or loss, that's why they offer insurance. If you have to send money to someone by such means, always check, cashiers check or money order is the way to go, you can always cancel personal checks and or you have a receipt from the money order or cashiers check, also with the option to cancel it so no one can go cash it.
IN my opinion, you can send cash or coins and be safe. but do not send them in just a basic envelope. a person can just hold it to a light and see the contents. use a bubble wrap mailer. pay the extra $.70 for delivery confirmation. people mail collectible Paper Money everyday and thats considered (CASH). you just have to do it correctly. Good luck.
I've learned, also through experience, that sending things worth anything in envelopes usually turns out badly. I use a small flat rate priority mail box for anything like that now (they are boxy and cannot slip through cracks or rip as easily. Also, an intermediary like PayPal can be very helpful, especially when you trust the other person. To do: you don't necessarily have to send the coins back, you could also send the money again.
i never made a purchase of coins in my life before this week, i spent $300 at the post office and im glad i did, i sent out the money orders and they were received, im sorry this happened to you but it is just something you gamble with whenever you send cash in the mail. so i agree with everyone else here, money orders and if you cant do that then make sure you double envelope it by using a bubble mailer
