MS 69 vs 70?

When it comes to splitting hairs at such a high grade, aren't we relying on one of the most subjective aspects of coin grading, like eye appeal and luster. In my mind, if I had "perfect" 20 coins laid out in front of me, the 70's would be the one or two that my eye first goes to. The ones that "pop out", but this would be different from person to person and also rely on an individual's experience with that type of coin. I think what the TPG grades offers is more as guarantee of value than an actual grade, especially if you are buying site unseen over the internet. Also, I definately agree with Yakpoo. All graded coins should have a an explanation sheet. Just think of the educational value.

Yeah, because you have to have others validate your coins in order to feel good about them. ;)

Sorry Owle, but couldn't resist. I spent the last weekend cracking out a few TPG slabs, freeing their contents to again breath fresh air. Personally I really do not care what someone else thinks about my coins.

Like others have said, why do you need to buy them slabbed at all? ESPECIALLY coins in OMP, why is there more documentation required? You like the coin, you have all of the proof you need its authentic, case closed, enjoy your coin.

Yeah but who defines "prefection"? It's really the holder who defines perfection. I have some G4 coins I really like that I could say are "perfect". ;)

I was being facetious. But there are modern coins that will bid a lot higher in MS/PR 70 than 69, just check the Teletrade and Heritage auctions. People with very deep pockets want the best, not that I have been lucky in getting bidders going wild with my PR/MS70s.

I am sure you have sir. I have to say I read a piece a while ago talking about UHR, and the "most perfect, desired one of them all, the coveted First Strike 70". It said the silly first strike was increasing its value by thousands. How the blazes does a silly "first strike" have anything to do with the quality of a coin?

I tell you, I laughed so hard at that segment of US collectors I had coffee coming out of my nose. I can hardly think how many great, historical, significant coins that could be had instead of your UHR 70 have a "first strike" label.

Different strokes to be sure. I guess I should consider myself lucky that these deep pockets don't bother me in my little dirty corner of ancient coin collecting. Let them buy this stuff and leave me alone I guess. :)

    Good points!

Would you rather have several nice AU type coins or a single MS63? The price on many coins climbs exponentially as you go from AU50 to MS65, the rare ones.

    Here are a couple of 1904 $20s in MS66:

Would you rather have one of those or six or seven MS63s??? Personally I am not looking for perfection. For once I would like to write copy for the auctions and coin companies.

"An historic opportunity to buy a one of a kind premium quality example of a truly classic American gold coin. Luster is booming, antique quality is shimmering with hints of aurelian and sea green. A coin that will warm the cockles of your heart and that is sure to be the envy of other dedicated and discriminating collectors such as yourself".
