I have a 1879-CC Morgan dollar and am wondering if you guys can give me an idea of its grade and whether or not the CC is "Capped". Unfortunately this coin was in a tray bouncing around with other coins for years.

    I'm guessing it's around AG03 to G04?

Also, does the capped version mean a higher or lower value?

    Thank you!

I've never graded before but I have been studying as of late.
    I would say a G-4
Because the date and mint are readable. Also the Liberty and Eagle still show an outline.

Alright thanks. Any ideas on whether it's capped or not? I'm not sure how to tell. Might be too difficult to tell because the date is a bit smudged.

    GW,

It is not the Capped Die Variety of the 1879 CC Dollar. The Capped Die variety you refer to is the VAM 3 for the 1879 CC. What you have is a VAM 6. Normally, it would be difficult to definitively determine the VAM variety from a photo on a worn corn but in this case it is a piece of cake. The VAM 6 of the 1879 CC is the only variety that has a Centered CC Mintmark and that is what your coin has. All the other varieties for the 1879 CC have the Mintmark shifted to the left.

Here is a VAM 3 Capped Die variety from VAMWORLD

Notice the MM, it is not even close to the MM location on yours.

Now check out the MM on this VAM 6 from VAMWORLD. It is a perfect match for you coin

Thank you for the response and details, much appreciated. I had heard about VAM but wasn't sure what it was or how to research it, but the site you linked is very good.

    Thanks.
