I just started looking at 1970s small dates today! ...so don't go by anything I say. My "guess" is that the loop of the "9" appears to be a small date. However, the liberty is quite bold...which suggests large date. I'll be interested to see what someone that actually knows what they're talking about has to say!

i think we need to have a write up section where we can write up how to tell the difference between certain die varietys so we dont get like 100+ random posts about wide ams, large or small date varietys etc... lol but i see it as a large date unfortunately.

Sorry Nawatl, that's a large date for sure. I think the image you're using may be causing the 9 to appear more "hooked" and "pointy" than it really is. Also, on the small date, the top of your box isn't touching the date, whereas the box on the other date touches making the 7 appear to be higher than what it is. The tail of the 7 is longer than the 7 on the small date. Liberty is not weak, and you have a thin 0, not a fat 0 that's characteristic of a small date. Keep on huntin'!

IMO this coin is a large date. If you look at the picture his box tells you all that you need to know. If all of the digits line up across the line, small date... but the line runs above all of the digits but the 7. It is lower, and that's the tell-tale sign. The small date is also referred to as the level 7 variety.

James is right. The Lincoln Cent resource is the best place to see and learn about Lincoln varieties.

I would add, though that if you want us to tell you if it/'s a LD or a SD, you can't obstruct that portion of the coin as you have. Post a pic without the inset and it would be easier to judge.

IBERTY is too strong, the upper loop of the 9 points to the mint mark and the 7 is definitely low.

    Large Date.
