Hi there, I recently bought a group of coins and this dollar was among them. I have not been able to identify what it is. The "Vickie" is what is throwing me off. Does anyone know what this is and have an idea of the value? Thanks
This is called a love token What people would do is carve or have a someone carve a scene or a name or intials into a coin and give it so someone they loved. This one looks to have been a brooch. Some are plain and some can get quite extragavent
It is called a Love Token and t his is more ornatate the others and not often seen on morgan dollars. To the right collector, around $50 in my opinion.
The reverse was engraved, and the extra metal on the obverse was probably there to hold a pin. Kind of like this one: http://www.jhonecash.com/coins/coin_show_archives.asp?cert=love_409 No idea of value, there are people who collect engraved coins/love tokens, but I'm not sure how desirable this example would be.
