I've recently gotten into coin collecting and nickels are probably my favorite type of coins . I've found these 12 coins from mixed rolls of coins from banks and I was wondering if someone could help grade them and give their approximate values each? It would be greatly appreciated =D. I've included some pictures from my camera to show luster and some images from my scanner to show detail. Most of the coins I think are around AU/BU grades? I really don't know how to grade stuff so that's just my general guess. 2 of the nickels are key dates ! You can click on the images for supersized versions! I'm just trying to figure out if it's worth my time to be keeping random dates that are in this area of condition, or if theyre worth face value lol.
From your photos it looks like you have some ok nickels there, although Jefferson nickels don't really have any varieties to speak of. The one thing you definitely want to look for on Jefferson nickels is what is called "Full Steps" where the steps leading up to the front door on Monticello are completely intact. Full steps add value and not much else besides toning, and of course minimal wear and blemishes. Nickels are a very fun coin to collect and you definitely have some good starter coins. :smile On a side note, kudos on making your own coin sleeves, but be sure to only use mylar or some other non-acidic plastics to cover your coins, the treatment chemicals in cling wrap, and many other household plastics can damage your coins. Here is the website I started gathering info on Jefferson Nickels when I was starting out. http://www.coin-collecting-guide-for-beginners.com/rare-nickels.html And Welcome to Coin Talk.:welcome:
Thanks for the response! With full step nickels, do all the steps have to extend the entire way across, or are they still considered full steps if the steps are worn off of one part? And for my coin sleeves I just used packaging tape, with two layers of tape on each side of the coin, so the adhesive part is stuck together and the coin doesn't touch the adhesive... is that okay?
Yes, for full steps, they need to extend fully top to bottom, left to right, with no wear. As far as your sleeves, I don't see that being a problem for a short term solution.
Yeah, I figured they wouldn't really be worth much. it looks like most of them have a few steps on the one side, but they're worn down on the other side a lot. it does look like the step on the 1987-P are all intact, but I don't have a magnifier strong enough to count them. Oh well, I guess the only ones that might be worth a buck or two are the 1938-S and 1938-D. I'll probably just focus on silver war nickels, buffalos, pre 60's, and key dates from now on. I've also been keeping a bucket of pre 1960's nickels to look back later and look for errors if I ever get a better magnifier. Thanks again for the help, kind sir!
