http://www.ebay.com/itm/1992-D-Colu...23?pt=Coins_US_Individual&hash=item1e6a8f9f5f I was looking for modern commemoratives and came across this coin. Please click the link. I don't think this looks like a PCGS label. Is it maybe an older holder?
Thread Jack! I got a call from the new bullion shop today regarding 4 NGC slabbed ms65 Morgans & 11.50 in 40% half's(he doesn't like dealing with coins) I bought the half's for $100 & checked out the Morgans. The coins appeared to be real? But the slabs didn't. The hologram was partially missing on one, the label was glue curled on another, the other two slabs appeared to be yellowed. I voiced my concerns & he quickly stated that they were consigned & the seller has hundreds of them. I cannot say with certainty that the coins are legit, and definitely don't want them to trickle into the pawnshop where I get most of my "junk" silver. I'm sure they will be gone when I go back tomorrow. It never hurts to question a slab these days.
You should also verify that the coin is in fact in the PCGS database by going here> http://www.pcgs.com/cert/
The reason why I thought it looked funny was because the information is in different places. The year and mint are in the top left position on other PCGS holders with a Columbus commem. That's why I thought it might be an earlier style. Now I just got really suspicious. When I looked lower on the auction page, the reverse side of the holder is shown but, conveniently, the area where you should be able to see the holographic PCGS image is covered with the Park Avenue Numismatics logo. Anyone else get a little more suspicious?
Here's another one, it's just a special design label: http://www.ebay.com/itm/TTG-1992-S-...00?pt=Coins_US_Individual&hash=item20c1939568 PCGS puts the American Flag on their labels from time to time. They do it with ASEs too: http://www.paradisemint.com/2012-Silver-Eagle-PCGS-MS70-Flag-Label_p_2676.html My guess would be the submitter requests the special label (probably a bulk submission).
Personally, what I think is that the company put their own label over the reverse like Teletrade does.
looks legit to me. the grading companys have made all kinds of label backgrounds in the last few years. or if you sub mit enough coins you can get what you want.
I would be very suspicious and so should you. When you do look up the Certification like pennyguy suggests it says that the coin with that certification should be in a standard holder. Yes they have bulk submitter holders and yes this could be one. However PCGS's website claim that bulk submitter labels are special labels. So my guess is their data base would say it had a special or bulk label. Also suspect is why cover the hologram especially when you claim to be a PCGS authorized dealer??? Plus with these bulk holders the barcodes are on the back as well so again why would you cover it up??? Finally the only special flag inserts I have seen the flag is a block type with all parts showing not a waving flag going up off of the top of the label. If you really want to own this coin and be safe the best bet is forward the link to PCGS and ask for verification of the label. It can't hurt you, and can only hurt the seller if it is indeed counterfeit or a genuine slab with bogus insert labels.
I haven't see a special label listed on PCGS cert verification listed under the holder type. These are all listed as standard holders: http://www.ebay.com/itm/2011-25th-A...874?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item43acd75492 http://www.ebay.com/itm/TTG-1992-S-...00?pt=Coins_US_Individual&hash=item20c1939568 http://www.ebay.com/itm/2011-D-PCGS...07?pt=Coins_US_Individual&hash=item20c18bd0c3 The oversized holders (like for the 5 oz coins) and secure plus holders are noted under the holder type though. I seriously doubt anything is wrong with the slab in the OP.

It is in a "standard" holder. It simply has a special label. Personally, I have absolutely no doubt that its a genuine PCGS Slab. BTW, the coin below was a "Bulk" submission. PCGS has produced graded coins in non-Standard holders (5 coin State Quarter Sets, Regency Slabs) and the reference on the PCGS web site addresses "labels" not "holders". PCGS Authorized Dealers can and often do get some special labels but you have to submit an awful lot of coins in order to qualify. Here's a couple of examples. Both were only available to PCGS Authorized Dealers. Both were bulk submissions and both show as "Standard" holders in the Cert Verification.
The coin in question was slabbed between 1999 and Feb of 2002. (In fact probably between Sept 2001 and Feb 2002.) The placement of the coin type and the date is correct for how they were doing commemorative coins at that time. The coin was part of a bulk submission with the dealer requesting and paying for a custom/special label. I never saw any of these special flag labels until the WTC attack and I believe not until after the Collector Universe flag label on the WTC "Death coins". NGC also did some special request flag labels around that same time.
