Not sure that I'll get much help, but hoping someone has seen one of these sold before. I have an MS60 1875 DDO FS-011 in an ANAC's old style holder, noted as lightly cleaned.
The total population on these things, according to the cherry pickers guide is about 7 I think. NGC shows 4 I think, though the census is such a problem due to crack outs...
Anyhow, how in the world would someone value this? Has anyone ever seen one sold, and if so, for how much?
    Any thoughts are appreciated.

GDJMSP - how did you find that data? what auction site is that from? Is this the FS-0011 1875 shield or one of the other variants? The cherry pickers guilde indicated that other variants of this year were far more common, but that this variant should go for a lot more money than that. Considering there are 7 known samples, it seems odd.
Anyhow, the information is great. Can you point me to the website so I can validate the specific type?

    It's a secret :secret:

Easy - go to Heritage, open the auction archive, click on Shield Nickels. When the window opens type - 1875 DDO FS-011 - into the search box and hit the enter key. Then just click on the item that pops up, scroll down the page a little - it's right there. I just copied it over for you.

You gotta remember, the Cherrypicker's is over 6 yrs old so the data is quite outdated. And since the book came out and folks knew what to look for - a whole lot more of a lot of things have been found. But as you can see by the dates of the auctions not much has changed for this coin since '93.

    Richard -

I should have checked more carefully, when I clicked on the 1 coin that came up on my search it listed the auctions I posted - however I did not click on those. They were not the 1875 DDO FS-011 - but plain 1875 shields. The one auction is correct though, this one - Auction 346, Lot 6079 Saturday, May 8, 2004 63 NGC $747.50.

So, if your coin is an MS60 and that one was a 63 - all we can do is make an educated guess - I'd say it's probably worth around $250 - $300. Sorry about the confusion :(

Not a problem, I'm just glad to have some data.
NGC shows 4 better, and I don't have access to the PCGS census. As far as pricing, I was curious, but I am not selling. It is a great coin, with MS64 level of detail. It even has most of its original luster, despite the cleaning. I bought it raw hoping it was what I thought it was, and took a bit of a risk.
I plan on holding it. It has tremendous rarity, just not tremendous popularity. Popularity can change, and rarity is unlikely to...
I found one on a site for sale in VF yesterday and requested a price. I'll post what they come back with!

There was another on heritage that sold for about $170 in VF. Plus I have one in F shape.
