I'd like to make sure the dates of my 1913 buffalo nickels are legit. I have posted photos of all my six varieties at: http://s72.photobucket.com/albums/i182/howdyohio/ I'd admit that when I bought these, I was young, naive, wanted to fill in those holes no matter what, etc. The dealer sold me these as 'fair' condition. This seems reasonable as other features are easily distinguished but the dates are so hard to read. I have no trouble accepting the 3 1913 type 1 coins. They all have the raised mound and of course, only 1913 nickels could have them. So I want to make sure the type 2 coins really say 1913. Any opinions? Is it common to attempt to alter or pass, for example, 1918 coins as 1913 coins?
In my opinion they would be classed as no date coins - except for the '13 type ones. But you still can't make out the date even on those.
I think the S looks right, but the P is completely indistinguishable to me. As for the D, I don't know, but it is deffinately an acid date.
They have that acid look and I can still just barely make out a date. They probably aren't fakes, but they are really low quality. I hope you didn't pay too much for them.
I realize these and many of the other early buffaloes I have are acid-treated. And no, I did not pay much for them.
They all appear to be acid dates. I can't tell on the P or D, but the S definitely looks like a 1913.
