I have recently aquired an extensive collection of coins from my now deceased grandfather who was an avid collector. Among his collection were two metal bars, silver in color, stamped w/ the name "Moffat & Co" on one side, the number 20 on all 4 corners, C/D Stamp, and US on both. On the opposite side, one bar says "6oz", C/D -> "1852" and has a depression like a coin in the center. I can make out a ring and what looks like several stars surrounding the coin. Perhaps a face or some other blob in the center. The second bar is almost identical however instead of 6oz, it is marked 8 oz. Unknown metal, probably not silver, although it has a grey dull finish. Any information anyone has regarding these bars would be greatly appreciated. I will probably be using this forum quite extensivly in the future since I am not quite as knowledgeable as my Grandfather was, but he has some wonderful gem pieces that my grandmother wants sold now to help suppliment her retirement. Thank you all in advance for any small piece of information that you might be able to shed on this situation. Nate. P.S. I will attach photos in the future, however, I have just returned from visiting my grandmother, and am not yet unpacked or situated. Thanks again!
PLease photos, Please. IT sounds like you have fallen upon something quite unique or on the other hand a couterfeit. I'm excited to see the images. Refer to this address: http://www.coinsite.com/content/cdanswers/cdarchive27.asp It's the closest I could find and may help you out.
Palladium possibly... http://www.nwtmintbullion.com/palladium.php there is a link for you to cheak out.
This is odd indeed as the big western silver finds weren't until later and Moffat & Co is well know for their gold coins and bars. If it is genuine (a very unlikely outcome, IMO) then they are rather valuable, but be cautious as they are known to be countefeited (the gold bars, anyway) and the fakes are way more common than genuine ones are. I would go to www.money.org and look for contact info for the ANA (American Numismatic Association) and contact them with a question about how to have it authenticated. they should be able to put you in contact with someone who would be able to authenticate (or disauthenticate) them. The phone # for the ANA is: 800-367-9723 and the general contact email addy is: ana@money.org Good luck and please share photos when you get the chance and keep us updated on what you find out.
Howdy GrandFCoins - Welcome to the Forum !! Before you go to far with those bars you should read this - Click Here - carefully. If you have coins in the collection that you are interested in finding out about, please post the info and pics if possible and we'll be glad to offer any help we can
All that and without a computer ! It looks like many have been through the ringer. There are those that tell ,but how about all those who feel shame, for greed and fear. Passing on knowledge is much more important then ever. I have a ninety year old Father in Law I help when I can as he lives a couple of blocks away. The deals brokerage houses, and others try to sell are well, just plain trash. I guess buyer be ware has more of a point to it then ever. Be wll Floyd
I also have a Monday bar I found in my late father in laws belongings. But mine is 7 oz. By your description it sounds exactly the same as what I have. Did you fine out any more in formation?
This thread is almost 18 years old since the first, and last post. The original poster, started this thread, with only one post, and never posted on the Coin Talk forum again. He was last seen on the forum on Dec. 7, 2009, and didn't post anything. He did not post any pictures of the Moffat bars he claimed to have. Hopefully you'll start a new thread and post pictures of your Moffat bars. It would be nice to see what you are describing. Oh, one last thing, welcome to CT. Enjoy your stay.
NECRO POST ALERT - THREAD FROM 2006 But since it was brought back to life: History of Moffat & Co (although PCGS only lists their coins) https://www.pcgs.com/coinfacts/category/territorial/california-gold/moffat-co-1849-1853/1723
Ditto this, especially since the first poster never returned. You've got me curious. And again, welcome to CoinTalk!
