How do you sort your coins? I know there are holders and folders and what not, but what I'm talking about is sorting. Currently I use boxes, such as you get from Mint deliveries. All 2x2 Wheat cent goes into one box. All 2x2 Memorial's go into box # 2. All 2x2 V nickels go into box # 3. All 2x2 Buffalo's go into another box and so on. Now what to do with all the boxes. What is your method? Comments? Dave
Hi Dave, I use "coin wallets" once I get down to specific groups. They hold between twelve and thirty six coins each in 2x2's and stack well. You can usually find them cheap on ebay. Hope this helps. Joe
I don't have a big enough collection to say much, but I sort everything in boxes too. I just grab some bank boxes for cents and use those boxes to sort certain coins. And sometimes I cut a piece of cardboard to split it into two.
Hi Cazkaboom, Great idea about the cardboard separator. Some type coins I have are very few in numbers and it makes no sense to have a separate box for a very few coins. For instance, I can put all the nickels in one box separating the Shield, V's, Buffalo and Jefferson's separated with the cardboard dividers, or I could have a separate box just for Misc. coins. Would you separate all your silver coins into one box? Dave
I am a big fan of this 'box' method, but I don't put all silver into one box, I actually have a labeled bank box, one for dimes, quarters and nickels (Don't have a half box) but I separate everything into 2x2's and then put them into the boxes. Silver of the same type goes into one box, and the remainder, or what goes into my collection goes into my binder.
at this moment i sort my coins in a coin folder. I have a folder for the one cent pieces, a folder for dimes, .... They are all sorted by year and mintmark, only flaw in this way of sorting is that when for instance if i have a coin from 1979 and one from 1981 and then i recieve a coin from 1980 i have to reorder the whole folder. So that is something i will have to take care of in the future when my collection grows.
Ha ! Ha ! My wife would think so. Nope I just have a lot of coins and trying to think of a way to sort them so that I am not so confused.
Mine are housed in PCGS Blue boxes by date and MM. It's easy since I only collect two different series.
@cmp9ball i saw that on ebay, the 80,000 unsearched wheat pennies for an outrageous price? and shipping would be a hassle hah
LOL. NO but you can have several binders for each series. I limit Peace and Morgan dollars to about 5 pages (100 coins) because of the weight. Silver quarters are seperate from clads. Roosevelts, a complete silver and clad set with proofs per binder. Cents are in a bunch of them. Some binders hold comparison coins (large & small dates). Just get a bigger safe for the good stuff.
That mess would drive me crazy ! I would be spending 23 hours a day trying to get them all sorted by year and mint into tubes and boxes. LOL
