Hi guys and gals, I have what I believe to be a 1936 D 3 1/2 legs Buffalo nickel. I've consulted my Cherry Picker's Guide and looked at 10-15 pictures from Heritage auction archives and believe I have a genuine variety. To my estimation, the first leg on this coin matches what has previously been slabbed by NGC and PCGS. While looking for other indicators, I noticed that on all genuine examples, the 36 in the date is stronger that the 19, which this coin has.

I would ask anyone who cares enough, to check the Heritage photos and see what I am seeing and report back. I wan't to send this coin to NGC for authentication and attribution and thought I would see what the forum had to say in case I am wrong about this and it is not the variety I think it is.

Also, I would say this coin grades at VF20 at best, but probably a F12. Even if the dings keep it in a Genuine holder, this could still be a special coin.

    Thanks for the feedback, Matt

Yes, I believe you have a 3 1/2 legged example, though I think it will be declared genuine, rather than receive a grade.

I appreciate your assessments Mark Feld and Duke.

Jim, I noticed that NGC doesn't have it listed either, but PCGS has it listed all up and down their site. Maybe I should just send it to them instead. Thanks for your feedback.

Yes, I agree that you have one there. Both Mr. Q. David Bowers' "A Guide Book of Buffalo & Jefferson Nickels" and Mr. David Lange's "The Complete Guide to Buffalo Nickels" mention this variety. In fact, Mr Lange's book even has a separate article about it in his book. The coin is damaged, but appears authentic to me. Good job.

Thanks everybody. I will be sending it in to be certified, but your responses make me feel better about doing that. My friend and mentor found this coin last Sat in a circulated roll. He thought he had something interesting (and a few others in the shop said nahhh) and I took a shot and bought it from him based on what I was seeing when I got it home. I was able to buy it pretty right as he gets his money and runs and I need to still sell it or hold it. He says he keeps his Cherry Pickers on his nightstand as bedtime reading so he can sort of memorize what coins to look for when he gets them in the shop. That's either pretty nerdy or really dedicated, but I'm sure most of us here can relate to doing some of that. It's crazy what is still out there to turn up.

I'll surely post what the pros say in a month or so when the coin returns home.

Well you guys got it right on the no grade, but that is alright with me. I found out that NGC has recognized these in the past and some exist in their holders, but no longer does. PCGS has only graded 154 to date with one in MS grades as a MS62. That is pretty cool as that is a low number to go around for someone trying to complete an entire set of buffalo nickels.

On another note, it appears PCGS is going all edge view. What are your thoughts on that? I guess I will get used to it just like when NGC started doing it.

Congrats Matt, if you don't mind me asking. Was this a cherrypick from dealer's inventory or is it something you've had for a while?

In terms of the all edge view, it looks clean and makes sense. I don't know why they haven't done this a long time ago.

What would be the value of this coin, if you don't mind me asking.

My dealer friend found it. He let me take it home and attribute it based on/using Heritage photos, etc. When I believed it was authentic, I made him an offer he was all too willing to accept being that he had 25 cents in it.

Impossible to know until I set it out at a few shows and see if there is any interest. I like it as a long time keeper. Matt

Unless they are a family member, they are few and far between. And even having a family member dealer hookup is still not a guarantee.

I am totaled here. I cannot even find a dealer interested in nice Lincolns. Maybe that is why I do so much on eBay and Heritage.

Sell it and finish your Lincoln collection ;)

Thanks Duke, It is not the money holding me up, It is finding a 14 S and a 26 D in 65 BN or RB that is holding me up. Date and mint collecting is tough, I'll prob never do it again and just buy nice type coins from here out.

    Congrats!

I do hate the edge view holders. Prefer the direct fit holders. To each their own.
