Morgan 1884-s Dear Community I have joined today as I have found two coins in my grandfathers belongings who sadly passed away in December. These are One Dollar coins and are silver coloured dated 1885 & 1884 I didn't think much of them until I walked past an antique shop selling coins and I thought, "wonder what their worth". so I yesterday (last night infact) I looked up what the coin said in Google and learnt what mint marks to check for the 1885 does not have a mint mark but the 1884 has an S which I think according to websites is rare so I've spent all day trying to figure out if this thing is real ? and im scared to take it to a shop it case they tell me its not and I look silly. My grandfather does not as far as I know have a connection with the US he was a compulsive buyer as I've noticed by cleaning out his bungalow. i have looked at some things to try and see if its real or not I took it out of the plastic cover & weighed the 1884 and it did weigh 26.73 grams but the scales I'm using are certainly not high precision just cheap digital £10 scales the condition is pretty good but I ddon'tunderstand what a vf or ms quality would mean I have tried to upload some pictures but they are too big. I have read some posts on here and it sound like you guys can help. thank you in advance for any help you can give.
Welcome to the forum. The coin looks genuine, but appears to have been cleaned and retoned. At least, based on the darker image, which looks quite different from the other, lighter image, showing just the reverse. The other dollar also looks to be retoned/unoriginal.
Ok that great i think my poor photography skills and phone are not the best in your opinion what would you think these might be worth? i have tried to add some more pics
The 1884 S (San fransico mint) be 38 dollars minimum, without grading them you can't get an exact price but the minimum grade vale is 38. The 1885 is a 0hilidelhpia mint (no mint mark always comes from philidelphia) is roughly 34 dollars. Hope this helps.
The (low) value of the coins does not justify the expense of having them graded. My guess is that the 1884-S is worth approximately $40 and the 1885, roughly $25.
on the site coins.about.com it list the 1884-s to be valued anything from 1884 S $27.00 $27,000.00 So does the condition my coin is in make it worth the least ?
The 84-S is common in circulated grades, and does not make a big jump in value unless it is in Mint State grades (MS-60 & up) which is not the case for yours. Chris
the condition will effect the value, yes. Either take them to the coin shop you original passed by and ask if he'd be willing to help ou determine their grade.....or I'm sure if you really want you can google how to grade coins and the different things to look for that determine the different grades and just kind of eyeball/judge for yourself.
