The best way not to lose on going through boxes or rolls in general is to hand count them right back into their wrappers. I count three coins at a time and can re-roll an entire box in an hour or less. I have noticed with nickel boxes that come in those clear wrappers that each box is short an average of 4 coins. You will have no choice but to eat the loss at a coin counter, this I cannot accept. Fair is fair and I will take out a nickel from 3 rolls to complete the final roll. Also, the counters wont accept foreign or Canadian coins that may be found so you will be forced to take a loss on those. With re-rolling your own coins you can put those back in if you don't want to keep them.

Its been skunk lately. How do you guys do it? I bank at two different instituons...I buy at bank (5 locations) and return to credit union (2 locations) They charge 15¢ per roll if you don't have a business account at my bank which I think is not very user friendly! When I return the coins to the credit union they don't even talk to me. Such is life of a searcher...

I would close down my account(s) at such a bank immediately and would write a strongly worded letter explaining why to their headquarters. One time many years ago when I was younger and less experienced in life a Wamu teller hit me with a per-roll fee to redeem about $8 worth of pennies. Never again! I won't pay a fee to redeem rolls of coins again and won't hesitate to tell a teller this, thankfully no teller has tried to charge me to redeem rolls since then.

Sorry I wrote that incorrectly. They charge the 15¢ a roll sur-charge on buying the rolls. I have not redeemed any coins at this bank, I redeem them at the credit union. When she told me about the sur-charge I must have turned 3 shades of red! She explained they pay money for the rolls blah, blah, blah and you have to have a business account to get them at no charge (which I DONT BELIEVE). I pulled out my wallet and showed her my business debit card and I told her that you didn't ask me if I had a business account, you asked me if they were for a business and I told you they were not, they were for me. She gave me what I wanted. Did not mean to mis-lead you on the 15¢. I have never heard of them charging to redeem the coins, whats next? They are suppose to be in the money business!

Still 15 cents to get coins. That's crazy! The point of the bank on a consumer end is to hold you money until you need it, and then give it in the way that you want it..... Think about this what if you went in and asked for $100 from your account, the teller then said if you wanted anything other than $1 bills they would charge you extra...... Just doesn't make any sense, seems like a subpar bank IMHO ( End rant )

Went to a local bank to cash my check and ask for halves - nothing doing there
Me asking her for halves did remind her I'm always looking and she will keep an eye out for me
I also asked if she had any old quarters, so she let me look in her tray - nothing doing there on the Q's or D's
Then I changed over my summer tires to my snows in 21 minutes, snow came last night and more tomorrow.

Stopped by a bank on the way back from lunch and got 1/2's with no problems, didn't even ask if I had an account. $50 in 1/2's -- skunk! The tale of the tape was 67 (70s), 14 (80's), 19 (90's). Why everytime I get 1/2s are there so many 70s? Got a couple of weak strikes in very nice shape but still consider it a SKUNK! Tired of skunks!

You'll need to get used to the skunks. After 8 months or so they won't bother you as much. Relish the finds and let the silver sit in the roll for a few seconds before pulling it out. It's a good feeling!

Had a little luck today on the way home. Stopped in and picked up my box for the week. In the box, I found 1 1967, 1 2010, 1 2011, 1 1994S proof. Then stopp in a second bank to dump some coins. The teller told me she noticed on someone's coin ticket that they had dumped about $15 in halves and asked if I wanted to dig through them. Of course I did. She opened up the machine and pulled out the bag for me to didg through. Found 3 Franklins, all 1963, 7 40% BU halves, 2 1970D BU Silver (Look like they just came out of mint sets), and the rest were BU halves from the 70's.

I only wish my other tellers would let me dig through machines like she does...alas.
