looking to get an idea what this is worth, sorry about the quality of photos all i had was my cell phone at the time. the lighter color across the center of the coin on the front is where it was in an album and had scotch tape across it to keep it in (it killed me to see it that way).
Tho it looks genuine from those pictures... clear pictures are going to be needed on this one before you'll get any reliable answer.
i will do my best to get better pictures soon. i lost my charger to my digital camera so as soon as i get it charged up i will post more. it was in an enormous hoard of coins and a large portion were still in original packages/ graded etc.. this was in an album full of capped busts and Morgans. we have sold off the gold coins in the lot and all were legit so i know this one is also. to show the age of the coins and how long they had been stored all of the morgand were in 2x2 holders with their price tage on them. prices paid were $1.99 - $20 a piece on the morgans depending on rarity. Flying eagle pennys with prices of $0.65 a piece. etc
I will say that if this coin is genuine it's worth $1,500+ tho from what I see in the pics... the tape streak does hurt it tho... but there is nothing you can do to it.
I know everytime i look at it it makes me sick to see the taped streak across it. i have been sorting all of this massive hoard and have made myself a small pile of what i plan to buy for myself and this is one of the coins. my keep pile so far is this coin,1877 Trade dollar, 1796 draped bust Large cent, 1884CC Morgan.
Sounds like some good stuff! You might make some other threads about some of the other coins once you get your camera up and running. I'm sure folks would like to see them.
I spent 5 hours sorting on Wednesday and have about another 4 or 5 hours to go to get them all seperated. i have all the proof sets in one pile. modern silver such as eagles and commemoratives in one pile, gold and platinum in a pile. junk silver in a pile. and from there all of the good older coins such as those are in a locked container as i find them. Morgans are in a box and 3 albums full as well.
i will get better pictures as soon as im able. i snapped that with my cell phone before leaving on wednesday and your right it is horribly blurry.
That tape mark is going to kill ya. From these pics I don't see any reason to doubt the authenticity, but you never know. Anyway, for this coin, it would be worth the money to get the coin slabbed even though it will come back in a details\genuine holder. I think you will do better money wise if you eliminate the customer's possible doubt of authenticity. The coins grade is somewhere around VG10 or F12, but with the tape mark, it is difficult to say what the coin would bring at auction. I would put it somewhere around $500 - $800. If your were to sell it with a Buy It Now price and you were willing to wait, you may do a bit better. Mike
thanks for the replies so far, i know how hard it is to tell from these photos and i will post more possibly tomorrow. the condition of the coin in hand is much better than any of the others i have seen on ebay where the date is worn away or all of the details are very faint. it was with a lot of 31 capped busts which all graded VG-F so my guess is this is somewhere around the same. needless to say i was very disappointed to see it taped into an album but what can you do about it.
Hard to say. I would suggest getting it graded by PCGS or NGC. If it's not cleaned it could bring alot of money. I can't tell you how much if not cleaned because 90 percent of them are cleaned. If cleaned $2500-$4000.
I've never done this, but it might be worth sending to NCS for conservation; they may be able to do something about the tape lines.
Definitely looks genuine but darn that tape sure hurts it. It could be conserved by the right person...don't try it at home tho.
i wouldnt dare mess with it, the boss wants me to put it on ebay thursday after the 1893S morgan ends. hes having me list a few of the better ones one at a time. I told him the tape will really hurt it but its still valuable.
I know tell me about it, imagine how i felt when i found this coin taped into an album. i found a few others this way but none quite as valuable. it was a lady in her late 80's and she had some of these for over 50 years some were even her parents so theres no telling how long the tape was on it.
Just ouch. Seems there's a sad story of unfortunate coin destruction, then a gift or something that keeps the hobby less depressing, but maybe that's just me
1800 B-17 R-1 Not a rare variety but a nice coin. Looks to still have tape residue on the coin. Could probably be improved with a treatment in acetone to remove the residue and then stored for awhile in a in a kraft envelope to allow the center section to tone down a little. You won't eliminate the lines but it would soften the effect.
