Is it possible to remove the below blemishes without hurting the coin's value (Perhaps with acetone)?
An acetone bath will not hurt the toning so Yes it would be worth a try. I think that when the globs of goo are gone you will have some possible ugly spotting underneath
I'm having a hard time identifying exactly what the spots are. However, I can tell, even if they are verdigris and removed, the stains under them will remain. Acetone would be a poor solvent choice. They are lightly adhered organic-based residues, xylene would be much better. From what I can tell, they are either permanent carbon spots or verdigris. If they are verdigris, the only safe and effective product is VERDI-CARE.
ok once again let me re-iterate this a clearly as possible, "do not , i repeat do not listen to anybody that tells you to clean your coins. this is a dumb idea and detract the value of the coin"
There were around 586 million 1940 cents minted. At most, this coin is worth no more than a few bucks even without the spots or damage on it. You'd likely spend more time and resources trying to get those spots off than the penny will ever be worth in your lifetime. I'd say don't waste your time.
Acetone won't hurt it any but don't know if it'll do any good. At any rate, the coin will still have spots where that gunk is. It's not worth sending the coin to NCS, since it has very little value. Why not spend it and give somebody a thrill when they find it?
that's actually a good idea geezer, i dont mean to seem fussy but cleaning coins is bad.. to me im ok with the spots and toning.. well spend it make some kid happy.. or start a new collector
