I have been going through penny boxes for awhile and have a jar full of the 2009's ,but this one is twice as thick and looks like it came from a proof set smooth as glass and super detail..and if so is it normal for them to be so thick and of course what do you think its worth
in 2009, there were some proof cents that were made on the the old 95% copper 5% tin and zinc blend that was in use in 1909. I do not know if it was sold as a standalone set, but I know that they came with the Silver Proof Set of that year. If you weigh that coin, and it's 3.1 grams, then it is mostly copper. If you weigh it and it is 2.5 grams, it is a standard copper-plated zinc coin, although still a proof coin with the S mint mark.
Hi stang1968, are the 3.1 grams thicker than the 2.5 .The one I have is as thick as 2 regular 2009's put together
Stang, ALL of the 2009 proof cents were made of copper and weigh 3.1 grams. No they are the same thickness. the greater weight comes from the denser material they are made from. The only way your coin would be twice the thickness would be if someone had been beating on the edge. Now a proof cent IS thicker at the edge than a business strike but that is because the rims are fully struck up. Something almost never seen on a business strike.
Thanks for the clarification. I did find that out after I made the post when I went to read up on 2009 cents. All I knew at the time was that the 2009 Silver Proof Set cointained a copper cent because the COA that came with it said as such. I'll be looking for more 2009 proof cents now that I know that- Copper looks way better than the zincolns!
The Lincolns in the 2009 uncirculated sets are also made of 95% copper (bronze) +1 on the cotton gloves
The funny thing is this came from a $25.00 penny box from TD bank..the question is how and who would rip open a proof set and chuck it into circulation for a penny value instead of bringing it to a coin shop...and I still have no clue what the worth is.?
lol ...you never know, times like this anything is possible..my redbook says 4.00 proof, but this isnt proof anymore if it has been out and about, but cant find any flaws or blemishes on it
