Dislike of Franklins: Not New The Franklin was not well liked when it came out. Information is available about this; I am sorry I cannot point you to it. This was the first large "modern" coin. Remember the Waker was designed by Victorians basically. The Art Deco era design had been firmly established by the mid 1940's; hence a large coin with a bold design and lacking much of the intricate detail most people had seen for well over a generation (defined as a 30 year period). So, I am not surprised people did not like it then and some do not like it now. I think it is the great sleeper. Far less mintage than Kennedy and now Kennedy is just a collector coin and looks far different from the original 1960's design of the President.
Now i love franklins...I really do. Although, i finished a ms64+ set and realized that selling them was a bit difficult. i feel like at coin shops they are overpriced and if you try to sell the entire set privately you get no return value. That aside i enjoy the fact it is not a president portrayed and the natural tone on them is beautiful at times
I like Franklin halves but the only one I have I found in an old box. But it has been soldered or someone put a blow torch to it.
I love franklins, i have ever since i was a kid and they were still in your pocket change then. i have a set of proofs. 50-54 in slabs pf66 and 55 on in pf67. also a set of chbu/ms63 raw and maybe 60-70 other BU franklins raw and graded.
*half closing my eyes and wistfully dreaming of my next Frankie; slight smile on my face* Really nice to read all these comments and see you share - two of the three I own have been on my Guess The Grade posts.
