I saw this coin on Ebay last week and IMHO it looks overgraded---and of course the carbon spot http://cgi.ebay.com/1856-Large-Cent...425575249QQcategoryZ11950QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem Now it could be just a weakly struck coin---the whole top half of the ovb looks either weakly struck or it has wear and has been re-colored. The stars/hair/headband above the L in LIBERTY and the curls......all seem to have wear on them....now if that is wear it would only grade AU but lets say that it is a weakly struck coin.....wouldn't the 2-3 carbon spots lower the grade below the MS64 level?? Speedy BTW--I see that SGS will take coins for grading....I think maybe I'll have to send them a coin or two and see how they come back :goofer: :goofer: :high5:
What's the pricing structure? 50¢ per Sheldon point, as in G-4 for only $2, AU-58 for $29, MS70 for $35?:rolling:
Boy... IMO I think its better than AU. but not a 64. I say 62 ish. The carbon spot is bad, there is also like you said question in front of liberty, there is also a mark on the rim, and field problem above her hair tie.
Looks like a weak strike to me, on the reverse in the leaves just below the c in cent there seems to be some corresponding weakness, but 64 is a bit much with that rim ding and hideous carbon spot I'd give it a 61,62 at best
$10/coin....and if I would send in more than 10 it would be $9/coin. Well the photo of the back isn't that good and I wonder why....they seem to be able to take good photos but the back is really dark....I wonder if there are more carbon spots? Speedy
